Kind of depends , low end could be a H&R Buffalo Classic , high end a Sharps for the Classic type rifles .
Encore - Contender type for a Modern type rifle .
And , but not least I'm sure is the BIG air rifles out there .
Remington carries an import single shot .
Rossi's also but most are the short type like the Handi's are .

PS . Here is a link to my new Buffalo Classic : http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=30561

Icer called it right. Depends. The Handi-Rifles are great, IMHO. Very durable, you can tweek the trigger without too much effort, various calibers to choose from, ........ I'm very satisfied with mine. They are easy to sell if you want out.

    Dave B,

Like Icer said, "kind of depends". So do a lot of looking and see what suits your fancy. Then go back look again, and do more research, and more research. look around at the local shootin range, and ask questions, and maybe get to shoot somebody's gun.

Don't just jump in and buy what another guy likes. It's kinda like Ford/Chevy. There's a lot of guns just got shot 3 rounds thru the gun, and found out they didn't like it, for whatever reason.

    Have fun Shooting,

I saw a new Italian Baby Sharps in 38-55 at the gunshop yesterday. I'll bet you would not have left the store without it!!! Double set triggers and excellent fit and finish.

    Single shots

Don't overlook the Ruger # 1. I have put a N.E.C.G peep on mine and its a lot of fun. Cartridge is 458 Lott, just kinda think 45-100 but modern. Good luck James

Thanks for the replys guys. I saw the Shilo Sharps site and the 74 shure looks great. I'm not sure I want to spend that much. I also saw the Charles Daly site and they have some nice looking stuff too. August, what kind of little Sharps did you see. The CD little sharps looks nice in pics also. I have seen a Buffalo Classic in the flesh, and it looks pretty nice esp for the $$. Iguess I need to see and hold some of them to get a better feel. Any more comments are more than welcome. The heat is building up.

    Dave B,

Did you see the price of the CD little Sharps? Cost as much as buying a Shiloh.........lotta money for an Italian Sharps.

At the NRA Convention in Louisville (you'll have to bear with me but I DID see LOTS of interesting items) I met Mr. & Mrs. Chiappa (the owners of Chiappa Armi in Italy). They, amongst other delightful firearms, build an extremely nice 20% smaller reproduction of the 1874 Sharps:

    http://www.chiappafirearms.eu/eng/de...ttoFamiglia=50

It is produced in some very interesting calibers (my preference would probably be 38/55). You might want to take a look at these. I understand they are going to offer about 200 per year in .22 rimfire. Now THAT is something that I would LOVE to have.

Savage makes a few, but they are no longer cheap....but the are accurate!
The Ruger #1 is a great rifle, and the NEF's are almost as ugly as an Encore, but shoot remakably well after you get the trigger worked on.

You can also pick up a Rolling Block and shoot it in 43 Spanish or get it rebarreled to 38-55 or 45-70 or what ever.... the old Trapdoors still launch 45 caliber boolits. I bought a descent Ballard (refineshed) in 38 LONG restamped 38-50 for under $600 last time back. Lots of used Pedersoli floating around. A new rifle is that until you fire the first shot....

I made a deal with another member and picked up a decent RB for a good price. Liked it so much I'm spending three times what I paid for it to have it reworked. And the total will still be less than a new one from Remington.
Warning: I know Judo. If you force me to prove it I'll shoot you.
