    Mushroom Time!

This morning was 40 Degrees & never got out of the 60's today... despite beautiful blue skies!
Recent rain and a dip in temps just triggered mushroom growth! Yesterday I Picked 8 lbs of Ram's Head mushrooms in 10 minutes around the property line.
I probably could have let them go a few more days to double in size ...but when you get them earlier they are very clean & bug free ( and tender)
Some years I have harvested up to 60 lbs just between the 2 old oaks on our property. I call it "sacred mushroom ground" and try to keep it protected

WOW, never found any. I usually find things too old. Need to watch for puff balls soon.

Mushrooms are something I wish I knew more about. I like them, but confine my eating to those purchased in the supermarket. There are folks around who are very knowledgeable and actually supplement their income handsomely by going out into the Cascade forests and picking them. They look for several kinds, but I know that one of the big prizes is Morrell mushrooms. There are known buyers, and most of them go to Japan. Most of the pickers go armed because there have been many instances of someone with a nice find being robbed on some lonely mountain trail. I've never seen those like in your photo, and probably wouldn't recognize them as a mushroom if I saw them. Quite interesting. Thanks for the post.

I may have posted this before.
I have several books on mushrooms.
The best book by far for IDing western mushroom is "All That the Rain Promises and More...." by David Arora.
A hip pocket guide to western mushrooms...dale

David's book "Mushrooms Demystified" is the bible of mushrooms. I'll look into his other book, thanks for the tip, Dale.
