I've never seen an item that had a sticker, but no hallmark that was actually pewter. The made in Mexico wouldn't fill me with confidence either.

But since you own it now anyway, what happens when you try to shave a sliver off an edge with a knife? Will an edge melt easily with a lighter? Are the decorations pressed into it from the back with thin sections throughout, or are they cast in / thicker than the tray base?

I'm new at the pewter game. There's some great info on here about it and how to test it. My vote is yes. However I would melt in separately.

Is there a touchmark under the sticker? Rarely do I find a piece with a large flat area that big that doesn't have a dent. Especially stuff from the junk/thrift store/flea market. If it weighs a bunch then it gets a longer look.

After further examination I think I have a big aluminium tray I took a propane torch to it and could not melt it and it cooled vary fast after removing the heat. Anyone play golf that wants a ugly damn tray? Trade ya for some pewter lol.

When I'm looking at a piece of suspected pewter I'll rub an edge of it against something paper (say a price tag on the item next to it) it it marks like a pencil it should be either zinc or pewter. Next if you can barely scratch it with a fingernail or it gives to pressure it should be pewter. Also makes a much more dead sound when tapped.
It's only hubris if I'm wrong.

We've seen many times on the site there will be a tag or sticker that says Pewter but the item is something else. Your not the first nor will you be the last that has this happen.

I'm glad the wife was looking out for you. She should get an extra scoop of ice cream after supper.

If I did that, she'd buy me a twin to the first one.

Twin? It's liable to be the same one again.

thumbnail scratch test on the back has become my "go to" test. Pewter should be soft enough I can scratch in with a nail.
Most of us have wives that are exactly the opposite, we go find pewter items and spouse wants to rescue it from becoming a puddle. You can spot us outside of thrift stores, banging pewter on the parking lot to make sure it is too banged up to interest out better half when it gets home. :- )
Scrap.... because all the really pithy and emphatic four letter words were taken and we had to describe this source of casting material somehow so we added an "S" to what non casters and wives call what we collect.

Kind of hard to claim to love America while one is hating half the Americans that disagree with you. One nation indivisible requires work.

Yep I learned the hard way too!, I have a very nice tray on my coffee table that says "Mexican Pewter" on it, chalked it up to the learning process!
