What is the Lee 90498 .311 round ball mould good for?

I found a lee 90408 .311 mould in the bargain bin at the gun store, and picked it up real reasonable. I wasnt sure what it was upon purchase other than a small round ball mould. What is the intended purpose of a ball of this size? Gallery load in a .30 rifle?

Yes, gallery load and there are many threads about them

It should work as a patched round ball in a .32 cal muzzle loader. I know it is a bit small for the .31 cal 1849 Colt copy that I had.

It would also make decent buckshot, if you want to do four or five casts per shot....

Yes! this is #1 buckshot and is just the right size for the three pellets in a cal..69 buck and ball load. A .315 ball is just a hair too big and makes the paper cartridge with the ball and buckshot tight in the bore and difficult to ram home once the bore fouls and the barrel is hot, but .311 fits just right!

Slingshot ammo! Although I prefer .45 for mine.

30 or 31 caliber round balls make great buckshot loads IMO. Stacks better than 00.

I bought one, to make 0 buck for a 16ga, but as pointed out, it takes alot of casts to get any amount of shells. I have since bought a sharpshooter mold in 00, 0, 1, and 4. I am not fond of the Lee mold as mine will work for a bit then get near impossible to cast decent buck with.

I used that very mold for 9 & 12 pellet buckshot loads for 12g.

If I had several moulds going at the same time, it would pile up the buck fast enough I think. I'll have to give it a try next time I get the pot fired up.

I used it in my 37'' barreled 32 caliber offhand muzzle-loading rife for competition and squirrel hunting. Seems like it was about 47 grains in weight. Would knock the tar out of a squirrel and cause too much damage unless shot in the head or high in the neck.

I tried the mould out today, Works good. Took a while to get it up to casting temp as the projectile is so small. Slingshot ammo was more consistent than i ever had when I was a kid. Neat little mould.

I do enjoy slinging. Once I get a little better, I might just take it along small game hunting, once it becomes legal here.
