    powder question ADI AP70N

Is ADI (Australia) just a rebranded Universal Clays? I'm looking for a good 12 ga slug load using a 780 grain slug at .735 in a fully rifled Ultra Slug Hunter.

I sure want that to be right. Where did you hear it? I've asked Hogdon the same thing but so far they are silent.

Wiljen knows. I think there is a sticky on powders somewhere. Or it might be on Castpics or something like that.

    Hope you're doing well Wiljen.

Isn't that powder sorta fast to be pushing that heavy weight?

No, it's what everyone is using. Lok at the powders for heavy shot loads and it's right in there.

I'd have to agree with HT there a bit. Seems like a faster powder for a 1 3/4 oz load. Either its in a 3.5" hull with a lot of soft wad filler or the charge is minimum. Maybe cross reference the data.

A lot of us in Australia use this load and powder, we are fairly limited relative to what you guys can get access to with powders.
Our load is 28 grains of AP-70N, a 7/8 oz plastic wad with petals removed and if needed 1 x 1/8" card wad, then the bullet, all in a roll crimped 2.75" case.
It pretty much duplicates the older paradox loadings, chronographing at around 1050-1100 fps.
Most of us aren't after speed, just a load that shoots well for our paper target events in the BGRC.

Well, you don't need to have a whole bunch of speed with 780 gr, that's a freight train in itself. Interesting on the load though, do you actually have a wad model and hull model? What are the LUPs or PSIs on it?

Myself, I have used an RMC brass case with a Win AA wad and I've also got a large quantity of ACTIV cases where I use a Gualandi wad.
No idea on pressures, but Graeme Wright's double rifle book has some Paradox loads in the chapter on Paradox guns in it.
My firearm is a GP Greener with a Pac-Nor barrel in it.

Oh, so we are possibly talking about gun/loads that might exceed the 10,000 LUPs or PSIs that SAMMI or is it SAAMI gives a baseline for with conventional 2 3/4 & 3 hulls and shotguns.

No, I've seen pressure data that pegs these loads in the 9 to 10K range depending on the primer and the hull. These are quite safe in thick-walled guns and according to H&H, safe in Paradox guns.

Until they stopped making SR7625 I was using that for 10 gauge 2 7/8” , 12 , 16 , 20 and 28 . Now the SR7625 is strictly fit 10 gauge 2 7/8” hunting loads Bismuth loads , Buckshot and slug loads as well as buck/slug loads in the 12’s and 16’s .

ADI actually manufacture many of the Hodgdon powders. Hodgdon do the rebranding so to speak. If the above equivalent shows an ADI powder with a Hodgdon equivalent, then ADI manufactured it - mostly.

    An example of where ADI do not manufacture Hodgdon powders that are 'equivalent';

    AR2205 H4227 / H110

H110 is a ball powder not manufactured by ADI while H4227/AR2205 are stick powders and are the same thing.

As far as I can tell, these Ausies make pretty damn good powders.
