Thumbs up Powder Coating bore riding cast boolits

I have 3 NEI molds, 30,35 & 40 that are bore riders and use the NEI driving band to locate the boolit in the throat. They work great as naked boolits but when PCed, become too fat to go up unto the throat.

I "invented" a way to PC the lube grooves while leaving the bore rider portion bare.

Find a jar lid deep enough to cover the lube grooves (kinda like you would use in kake cutter lubing). Fill that lid with warm water to about a 1/4" below the top. Float the PC powder on the water. Grasp the boolit by the nose and dip it in, base first and swish about a bit. (Note: works best with frosted boolits as does shake and bake)
Set them down base first to dry. After drying, bake as normal. Then size and load.
These 35s now go all the way up into the throat of my 35 Whelen No. 1 rebore and the driving band (DD) is engraved by the lands.

To the range tomorrow to see how they do.

Do they pass the smash test? If they do, that's a great idea for powder coaters that don't have access to ESPC equipment.

Cheap, easy and functional! Might be just what rifle shooters using PC have needed!

    Have you shot any yet?

Tagged for results - Great thinking outside the box though.

Tried them in my rebored No 1 one 35 Whelen. A prior proven 50 yard load of 26 gr 4227 under 1.8 gm of coarse cornmeal, dropped 3 in 3/4" @ 50 but fell apart @100, 3 in 6".
An old load I had in my book from 20 years ago of 37.5 OF Varget (no fillers) put 3 in 1/2" @ 50 (2 in one hole!) and 3 in 1.25" @100 ! That's as good as that rifle does with jacketed bullets !

As this rebore is not up to Harry Pope standards, tomorrow it gets a check with the borescope and a good cleaning.

Going to try punching the Varget load up 1/2 gr at a time. My new Magnetospeed chronograph showed up today, so I'll see just how fast I can send a 292 gr .358 boolit downrange.

Cooking reduces BHN so let them sit a month before shooting or WD.
    Whatever!

Congrats on a great idea. I envision many uses for the "floating pc on water idea" Thank you for sharing it.

You REALLY need to read the WHOLE post. ONLY the 4227 load failed at 100.

    Here's the targets:

Group at left is Varget load @ 100.
Upper right is Varget @ 50 (3 shots)
    Lower right is 4227 @50.

My 9.3x74 dies just arrived (another Ruger No. 1). Took a bunch of the NOE molded boolits, stuck on gaschecks, and did my PC dip. They'll be dry tomorrow and get baked. Then I have to run them thru my SAECO .366 sizer, see where they hit the lands and load some up. Probably try Varget as it was so good in the 35 W.

Meanwhile, I'll load up some more 35Ws with higher charges and see how they do both on paper and thru my new chronograph.

    Dipped some more today.
9.3s and 308s. Sharp eyes may note a couple of Barnes TSXs on the left. Did not work are they are boattails. But I found some flat base 30s that did work. Why ? I want to shoot them in my 308 target rifle, side by side with uncoated ones, with identical loads. Accuracy and velocity will be compared.

Put the 9.3x74 Ruger No. 1 on paper with the new NOE boolits. Same load as the 35W, 38 gr of Varget, WW LR primers, seated to touch lands.

Calm day with lots of mirage.

3 at 50 to sight in. 5 at 100. Tried my new MagnetoSpeed chronograph which worked perfectly.
The 2 shots measured (the 2 touching @ 50) averaged 1625 fps. Bullets were not culled, just cast, GCed, PCed, sized and shot. This rifle with Hornady premium ammo will put 5 in 1.5" @100 so the cast boolits done gud !

FORGET, also tried PCing Barnes TSX hollow point flat base .308.
Shot them against non PCed ones. The PCed ones were slower and less accurate with all other variables the same. Was pushing them at 2975 from a 308 Win.

    Forget it.

Loaded up some 303 Brits with the 190 gr 308 version of the DD bore rider, PCed and sized .311.
A gentle load of 12 gr of PB it shows promise @50 yards.

Not hijacking, just wanted to share my similar experiment.....

Tried the "PC the drive bands" myself and I'm happy with results.

I have the same chambering problem with my NOE 311-247 mould. After PC-ing, the nose is too wide to chamber in my Rem 700 .300BLK if I seat to the crimp groove. I can set the boolit deeper and it'll chamber fine but I'd like to seat it a little further out.

My slightly different method was to stick the nose of the boolit, up to the first drive band, in a slightly out-of-round .308 case mouth. Using the case as a holder, the exposed end of the boolit is shoved, dragged and swirled around an open bowl of ASBB's and HF red. Pulled out of the case with skinny pliers, they're set base down and baked as usual. I had to coat them twice to get good coverage. Size at .309 to finish.

I still have to test fire them but I'm cautiously optimistic.......

Quite a difference in overall length.......

Lookin good ! Think it's a real breakthrough for using bore riding cast boolits.

Gonna steal your out of round case idea as it makes a neat demarcation line.

If you use my water/powder system, you won't have to dip twice.

Hmm..... Yes, I think I'll try that. One bake would definitely be a time saver!!!

OK, took the 9.3x74 No. 1 to the range. Upped the load of Varget to get 1800 fps. 5 shot group was 1" high but 4" wide. Any thoughts of what causes this horizontal dispersion ?
