    .358 Win subsonic loads

I have a large supply of .358" 160gr RNL bullets that I want to use in my .358 rifle for plinking and small game. They are plain base so I want the velocity low. My Lyman book starting loads begin around 1400 fps. I have Unique, Red Dot, and Bullseye powders. I could forge ahead on my own but I would like someone who's been there to chime in. Thanks! Best, Thomas. Oh yes my rifle is a 3-groove JES rebore 700 Rem.

In my .35/.30-30 with pistol bullets I use 6 grains of Bullseye for a quiet small game load, about 900 fps

You could go up to 8-9 grains in the .358 Win. with plainbased.

Thanks Outpost. I'll try 8grs. Bullseye. No need for filler-correct?

If you can find it, Trail Boss will serve you well. As long as you don't compress it, or load down so far you get a squib (did that, i hate driving out bullets), it's hard to go wrong.
I have loaded down a 230g Thor until I could watch it hit the paper through my scope, using Trail boss.

No filler needed. Standard large rifle primers are fine.

I used to use bullseye, unique, red dot but now use trailboss - for subsonic it's the best in rifle cases.

Outpost- 8 grs Bullseye with a Rem 9-1/2M primer(all I had) shows significant promise. I fired 2-3shot groups at the same target. #3 shot was a flyer that opened the group to 2-1/2"-but the other 5 shots were in 1". This was at 50 yds. I will get some standard primers today. Best thing is poa/poi are very very close. Best, Thomas.

I've been testing Red Dot quite a bit this season, and it has outperformed Bullseye for every subsonic configuration I've put together so far.

Thanks Kestral4k- I used RD with 90gr cast in my 25-06 and it worked great. How many grs to use for the .358/160gr? Best, Thomas.

Any load at or under 1400 fps should do fine with pb boolits.

If you can find any of the now discontinued SR 4756, 9.75 grains of it (that's what my Little Dandy rotor #16 throws) under the 160 grain Lyman 358311 gives pretty good 50 yard groups in my Ruger Frontier.
