Lyman Spartan Toggle With Damaged Threads

I have a yard sale Lyman Spartan that needs its toggle threads cleaned up. The correct handle will not thread into the toggle, which definitely has damaged threads. Who among us can tell me the proper size tap to buy so I can repair the threads? Thank you.

I hope this helps. It should be drilled and tapped all the way through. You could take it to a hardware store and see what bolt fit in the bottom.

I realise that this suggestion sounds stupid, but have you called Lyman to see if they would be of any assistance?Robert

If the threads are too damaged to repair by retapping it may need to be drilled and tapped to a larger size and an adaptor installed to accept the handle. Not a big deal as long as there is enough meat in the toggle.

If you call Lyman about a Spartan handle they will send to to Ed Sager in KC. He makes replacements. Lyman don't fix or repair them at all.

The handles are threaded 1/2-21tpi. Ed makes one that will not break with a longer threaded portion and a lock nut on top and underneath.

Is that Ed Sager the Herters Specialist? I've bought dies from him before. I wish he would inventory everything he has to sell, and put it on a web site.

Jim, that's the guy. He has no inventory at all, I wish he did also. Especially his Herter's tool collection. He has been a great friend for 20 years and his wife makes some REALLY great jams and jellies.

He's a good man to deal with, and great to talk to, on the phone anyway. I think we talked for four hours one afternoon. I hope he get's that book published, or at least offers it on Kindle.
