Quick and simple nose riding check for fit?

I think I've heard or read somewhere that sticking a nose riding style boolit into the muzzle of a rifle nose first, will give a general idea if it will be a good fit for that rifle. Is this true? If so, what sort of fit should I be looking for, a nice, smooth slide into the bore, or a tight fit that needs some pressure to force it down the bore? Thanks in advance for your input!
I shoot so that I can handload.

there should be engraving and pressure involved.
the other end of the barrel is tapered towards getting things to that diameter.

Agreed. The consensus seems to be that if a boolit will slide easily into the muzzle right up to the first driving band it will not likely shoot well in that rifle. My personal experience bears this out. Your boolit should be making some contact.

I also agree with the above posts the light engraving at the muzzle is ussually very close indicator but It dosnt beat good accurate measurements either. Also watch for a small radious between front band and nose riding section as this may give a slightly false reading. Ideally ink the nose with a magic marker and insert I like to see 80%-100& width marks of the rifling width at the muzzle.
