    Bikerbeans 10 gauge slugs

Bikerbeans was kind enough to make his Brooks .778" 730 grain HB mold available to me . And I cast 300 of them today of 50/50 WW's and pure lead .

do you need to fill the base on those like you do the laymans.

So far I've only used these in a 10 gauge ML . An original not one of the Pedersolis . If I can ever find a nice Parker EH with cut barrels or a set of barrels that have been cut for a #2 or #3 Parker frame I'll try these in a cartridge gun and then I'll fill the base of some for trial .

Brooks knife and mold. I would have them make the meplat wider if you plan to roll crimp.

I have never tried filling the base, maybe 6pt will and post his results. FWIW, the lower relief groove on the slug is shallower than the upper groove in an attempt to strengthen the HB section of the slug. This 10ga slug design is courtesy of turbo1889.

And a terrific design it is. I miss turbo.

It seems to me had had the same design mould for 12 ga. as well. The only drawing I could find was for the 10 ga. slug.

I used the basic proportions scaled down for a push out mould design for my 12 ga. The major difference is that my push out moulds are smooth sided. As with several projects I have not fully tested the slugs yet.

Just got back from the range !

Tried these slugs again in my Macfarlane original 10 gauge SxS ML . I have yet to find a thin enough material to use as a patch with these so I keep using the overshot cards I cut for birdshot and buckshot .

I had before tried 70 and 80 grains of granulated 777 2Fg . Today I started with 80 grains and again it shot high at 25 yards . So I bumped it up to 90 grains and again still on the high side . Bumped her on up to 100 grains and it got in a more workable area , so I figured I'd give 110 grain of granulated 777 2Fg a try and it did rather nicely or so I think !

My over powder wad cushion wad slug and over shot cards as they would go down the barrel .

This thing is starting to thump a touch with 110 grains and that metal buttplate . Think I may go back later this week and put up a larger piece of paper at 50 yards and see if I can get anything usefull out at that distance . I wouldn't mind thumping a deer with this thing this coming season .

I had forgotten I put hot glue in the bottom of the original ones Biker sent me a month or two ago and I hadn't finished shooting them up . So the group above was fired with glue filled slugs .

May not make a difference but I have gotten better results using a hard card wad column than with fiber wads in my slug loads. I am talking cartridge guns and 1/2" or thicker hard card wads might be an issue to muzzle load if the gun has a choke. A stack of 3 or 4 nitro card wads should work though. Your results look pretty good but you might want to try different wad columns to see the effect.

I'm using what I have on hand . I've been trying to find a patch material that will work with that slug and do away with the over shot cards I'm using to hold the slug in the gun . A regular TC lubed patch is I think to tight , so I need some VERY thin linen I think .

That over powder nitro card is not that tight in the bore of this ML but the fiber wad is snug . I use this thing to kill a deer with a slug and later perhaps with buckshot and I'll leave it alone any further except perhaps to load #8's for dove , some #4 for squirrels and some Bismuth #1 for Mr. Goose !

    6pt,

You must like recoil, I stopped at 80 grains of ffg with those slugs in my LC Smith.

    I have a circa 1840-1855 MacFarlane 10 gauge double barrel ML .

We've had this gun maybe 25 years and I just got around to shooting it about a year or so ago .
