    Pic for Marlin Junky

This is a picture of a 400 grain bullet cast from 50/50 WW-Pb and oven heat treated at 435 F for one hour. It was fired from a 480 Ruger SRH with a muzzle velocity of 1,250 fps. The range was 50 yards and the bullet impacted a target board of 7/16 OSB and then plowed into soft sand/loam soil. The expanded diameter is 0.75 inches. Weight retention is 98%.

The intent of this lower OHT temperature was to produce a bullet with a hard heat treated shell, with a soft inner core. Boolits tested at 22 Bhn after one month aging. Similar results can be obtained by a timed casting cadence and water dropping as was originally passed on to me by 45 2.1. Bullet diameter will dictate HT temperature and how soft the core can be held. Obviously, with 30 caliber and below it's very hard to get this effect.

    BABore,

Thanks for the pic and the info on 50/50. I think I'm having a boolit epiphany. We'll see what my new alloy (at near 23 BHN) can do next week in the M77 .350. I'm going to burn some spherical powders as usual but I need to decide on charge weights for IMR 3031 and Surplus 4895.
