30/06; Lyman 311284, need load data for IMR 4895

None of my loading manuals list a load for the 311284 with IMR 4895. I thought I saw several months ago someone using that combination with good results. Could someone recommend a starting load to work up from.

    Thank you

30 grains works in my Winchester Model.70.

I'd look at 30-40 Krag loads; I'd work up from 32 or 33 grs, maybe drop back to 30 or 31. Sounds like a good combo but I guess most folks shoot lighter boolits in their '06's. Snookie Williamson loaded 36.5grs 4895 under the 311284 in an 1895 Winchester in 30-40 but had miserable accuracy results. Have you tried 3031?
The above is merely a SWAG, there may be good reason why little is published along these lines. If you agree with my SWAG load at your own risk, of course.

Looks like Outpost75 posted a better answer while I was hitting the books.

In the '06 with cast, you can use 30 grains of any suitable powder, RL7, 3031, 4895, 4064, RL15 or Varget with #311299 or 284. With the faster powders you are around 1850-1900 fps and with the slower ones 1750-1800. Happy place with cast boolits!

I've tested 43 grains of IMR4064 with 311284 in my M1 Garand and recorded 2350 fps, and gone as low as 32 grains for 1750 fps. IMR4064 and ILR4895 give very similar results.

    From my old notebook
Gun: Springfield 30-06 24 inch barrel
311-284 heat treated 216 grain w/ gas check
    Powder IMR 4895
    chg weight vel. notes
    30 Grains, 1784 good accuracy
    31 Grains 1792 good accuracy
    32 Grains 1835 good accuracy
    33 grains 1871 good accuracy
    34 grains 1913 group larger
    35 grains 1950 4 inch group
this was a total of 35 shots in five shot groups. Good accuracy was 2 inches. I have no Idea what I meant when I wrote "group larger," other than the obvious.
I later shot this bullet with 20 grains of 4579 and found it to be more accurate, but I did not velocity test it.

I love the 311284 in 30-40 but my go-to powders are 4227 and 4198. I have used 4895 in the past and according to my notes, liked 31 grs. at 1811 fps.

For 30-06, that's where I would start. My guess is that you will end up closer to 32 grs as your sweet spot

With the heavy 30 cal boolits (311334, 311299 and 311284) in the military 30 calibres, my sweet spot for accuracy has always been between 1,800 and 1,900 fps. That recommended 30 grain load of the moderate IMR powders will put you right on the light end of that. Work up gradually (if needed) and tweak the load to your rifle and you should be good to go.
    Keep your powder dry,

    Scharf
