Mold advice for 7mm Model 1895 Chileno

Just found one of these fine DWM Mausers with a minty bore. It slugs .277/287. Thinking of one of the NOE 288s. I'd like to use this rifle in military matches, so maximum accuracy would be appreciated. What have you had good luck with?

    Abert,

All my Old 7MM Mauser bolt guns like the Lyman #287308 168 grain RN cast boolit. I size my boolits .285" and use sensible charges of Unique for excellent 100 yard accuracy. I need to set the rear sight to "500" for POA/POI at 100 yards.

I have a 1893 & 1895. The molds are a NOE 288407,150 grain FN, sized 287 for 1893 and a NOE 289,170 grain FN, sized 288 for 1895. Both molds shoot extremely well in both rifles , but I like the 288407 the best.

I had success with the NOE .290-135 Thor sized
.289 over 10gr of Unique. The bore in my 1895 ran
.287 as well. I was very surprised that it shot that good considering how large the throats are on these.
These rifles prefer long heavy boolits/bullets but can be made to work.

I have a VZ24 that slugs at .287". This is the mold that I use. I gas check and size them to .290" and load them at about 1500-1700 fps.

    Outstanding accuracy.

They also make this mold at .291".

Went ahead on the 289-170 FN. Now to find some gas checks.

You won't be sorry. I load them long to fill the throat. After gas-checking/sizing I give them 2 or 3 coats of BLL.

I like to shoot at 12" AR500 steel gongs. We set them at 50 yards, 100 yards and 170 yards. This bullet is deadly accurate on all of them.

This summer I want to try it at 300 yards with a spotter. I shoot the stock iron sights, should be fun.

    Best of luck,

    Steve in N CA

Thanks for the advice, Steve. Just looked up BLL and will mix up a batch. Also need a target sling for the 1895. This is going to be fun.

Anybody tried loading those .288 -- .289 boolits in necked-down '06 brass?I have some Lake City brass but the necks will come out thick, and those are big boolits. But if the military chamber neck in my Venezuelan is generous it might work.

I use necked down 30-06 brass, both military and commercial with slugs sized .285 no problem chambering.
Death to every foe and traitor and hurrah, my boys, for freedom !
