Ed Smith Document For Making Gas Check Makers

Ed Smith wrote a detail document with regard to the making of assorted Gas Check Makers.
The document includes the base design requirements for gas check makers as well as several designs.

The original document was posted several years ago. I have a copy original document and will forward via E-Mail to anyone wishing a copy.

Over the years I have made gas check makers for my own use using a copy of the original document.

I plan on taking the design to a machinist friend to see if he can duplicate the one version that resembles the One-stroke check maker design in 30 cal, 6.5mm and 8mm.

I might have been the last person on the forum to meet with Ed Smith when I lived in Maine. Ed lived next town over, in a nice home, in a nice neighborhood. However, his health was obviously failing, even then. His wife seemed no better. I tried stopping by a few times, but there was no car in the yard, and knocks on the door went un-answered. I even left a few notes tucked in the door. I also had a working telephone number for Ed, but no one ever answered the calls.

I'm lucky to have one of his original printed and bound copies. If the link, above, ever gets wiped out, I can scan the original that I have and repost another copy in a safe place.

Ed was a generous guy, and a good machinist. I pray that he's at the great shooting range in the sky, having a ball, making gas check tools, and shooting to his hearts content.

I used his write up to make my first one. Got rid of my PM one right after. No comparison once I started making checks with mine. And I'm just a dumb electrician with a Chinese hobby lathe

I made one as well and really like it. I use mine to punch check out of old gutter at 0.019" thick. They extrude a little deeper than normal thickness material of 0.014" but fit my 316299's perfectly. I use the simple hammer version using a plastic face hammer.

When I make another I'll make the punch engagement a little longer. Mine tends to pop out after a hammer blow if I am not careful. A little longer engagement would solve that. Otherwise it is a great little tool and yes, very generous of Ed to share. He did a great job and I am sure has helped many people.

A lot of really good information here thanks for posting.

For those that may not have seen a gas check maker operate here is my video of "Ram Checker" using Charlie Darnall's Freechex 4 prototype. Due to the high cost of materials I don't think Charlie made many of the 4's.

I have two of Charlie's freechex 4 die sets. Both are vast improvements over even the freechex 3. Much faster production.

Duke are you sure you have the FreeChex IV's as in Dragonheart's video. I understand that they never got beyond custom and prototype phases. Production costs were to be just too high for most casters and only a handful were shipped in custom calibers etc. -tj

Spell check doesn't work in Chrome, so if something is spelled wrong, it's just a typo that I missed.

Sorry, When Google took control of YouTube I think all the old videos were deleted. Even now YouTube appears to remove videos without warning or reason. When I get some time and want some frustration I will see about reposting this one and maybe some others.
