I don't paper patch, just read the threads because I like to learn all the aspects of our hobby. I keep reading about some of the fellas that make a comment about cutting those patches with scissors…well…here's a couple of cheap paper cutters from the office supply that I've had around for years. They cut clean without snags and do it fast…maybe you fellas already use these or something else better, but I thought I'd hang it out there just in case.

Some use scissors, some use razor knives, and some use rotary cutters.
I have tried all of those I mentioned, as well as a cutting board similar to those you pictured.

You can get good results with any of the methods, but some are faster - and some more precise - than others.

I found the 12 in version of this cheap. http://tinyurl.com/jjysnle

    Good clean, precise cuts.

I haven't gone away. I've made a further batch which I hope takes on board everyone's comments. Haven't been able to get to the range at a suitable distance and I couldn't miss a day like this

Sorry about the lateness in my answering your question.
Should the folded over portion at the base cover the whole base as Paul Mathew suggests in his book?
I've never read Paul Mathews comments but from my experiences the answer is> yes.
When a bullets base is wrapped correctly it is totally enclosed by a simple twist of the excess paper into a tightly twisted tail. Once the bullets patch has dried the paper tail is then cut back so's to look like a tightly twisted nub. For that purpose of cutting I use a Side Cutter pliers or as the old fellers call the same tool> a pair of Dikes. Anywho that how its done Ken.

BTW: I cut my patches with a safety razor on top of a square piece of 1/4" plywood.

I use a paper cutter similar to the one OS OK is showing.

I have found that masking tape placed at the desired places for cutting the strips and the patch length make it a very reproducible and very precise. The tape acts as a stop to butt the paper against, although much slower than other methods, works OK for me as I don't shoot as much as most here.

Tape on the surface for 40cal and .452s:

    Cutting strips:

Length stop for the patch - 45deg. in this case:

    And the patched Boolits:

Those are looking good! That's a lot simpler than my method - but then I have to deal with tapered boolits. Mine are a lot of work!

Finally got to shoot these things. Some at 300 yds and the rest at 600. Overall I was pleased. My technique with the aperture sights is rather suspect but by the end they were holding elevation well at 600 in a horizontal line with the shifting wind. Really satisfying

Lots of confetti around although not all in strips. A few that looked like circumferential bands with one clean edge and the other shredded and blackened.

This was with a soft 545gr Postell and 25gr 5744/Lovex d060 patched with green lined printer paper and then waxed.

    Time to make more.

That's probably the part that was folded under the base.
It seems you have the basics down for shooting patched to groove bullets.

    They seem to work ok

Shot some of these yesterday at 300yds with a gusty 8 o'clock wind. Given my abilities with aperture sights and I've only put about 100 rounds through the rifle I was very pleased. The white V bull is 0.5 MOA.

Guys, I took a run at paper patching 20+ years ago, enjoyed for a while then let it fall to the wayside as moved into bullet swaging and could do things a bit differently. That said, have a CNC cutter that will cut paper if people can lay out their patch designs to scale in some form of vector computer format. My machines are five figure commercial cutters and accurate to 0.003" so cutting a batch would be relatively easy except for finding correct thickness of paper compatability with commercial machines.

There is a company making a machine called the Cricut Expression and other models in the $200 and up range that will cut almost any paper with super accuracy, nest your patches and maximize every scrap of paper. Would not buy one for work but if didn't have professional machines at work and was serious about paper patching would buy one of these in a heartbeat.

    http://us.cricut.com/home/learn/machines/expression

Google Cricut then click on image tab to see examples of how intricate and exact this machine will cut paper of all types. Can pick them up on fleabay cheap. Have considered one for wife to make cards with as she likes such stuff and would take burden off me of doing her projects at work.

I'd seen those things advertised on TV but it never occurred to me to use them for patches! Hmmmm......
