Mossberg’s No NFA 590 Shockwave – Shot Show

January 16, 2017 by Travis Pike 1 Comment
The 590 Shockwave exists due to the best loophole. There exists a realm in American firearms law that allows for a non-NFA Mossberg 500 with 14-inchch barrel to exist. Without going into too deep into the why a Mossberg 590 that has never had a stock attached to it, and is longer than 26 inches is not considered a shotgun and considered a firearm. This puts the weapon’s legal definition as a firearm and not a shotgun. So barrel length isn’t an issue as long as the overall length is longer than 26 inches and it lacks a stock.
Some New Mossberg ShortiesFeeding the 590 Shockwave

Mossberg’s 590 shockwave makes use of the Shockwave pistol grip to extend the length to the required. Mossberg’s little cannon is quite the hand full but is also quite handy. Shooting it at the range we loaded with Aguila mini shells and some standard birdshot and had at it.
The Aguila mini shells fed because of a simple snap-in device called the Opsol Mini clip. This simple device makes the 590 Shockwave run like a champ with the little shells. Those little 1.75 inch shells double the weapon’s capacity.
While I’ve yet to run it with standard buckshot the 590 Shockwave feel comfortable and is easy to use. I bothered the fine folks at Mossberg for some, pestering them with questions about the Shockwave. My main focus was one price. Mossberg assured us the 590 Shockwave would be quite affordable and would hover around 400 bucks.
Shooting it was a blast, quite literally. The shotgun will hold a total of 5 + 1 round of 2.75 inch shells. This is a compact and powerful package. It has some of the same disadvantageous of a standard pistol grip pump but has the strength of being a shorter more compact package.
The Mossberg 590 Shockwave is one I’ll surely keep my eyes and wallet opened for.

Sweet. I love the straight grip stock. Just me but I'd rechamber it to .219 zipper.

I've always wanted a hornet. I'm going to try it out as that first and see how it does. I might K it. I didn't even know that .219 zipper was an option from .22 hornet. It has a 1-12 twist so I'm sure it will take some load development with different weight projectiles.

Ruger GP100 Match Champion. This is my first revolver and I'm loving it. Not having to chase after brass is a plus too.

I just picked up a Savage 11 Trophy Hunter XP in 243 Win. It was new in box but seems to be a little older model without the Accutrigger. Comes with a Bushnell 3X9 on it.
I got it for a hunting rifle.
I broke it in at the range over the weekend.
This is more than adequately accurate for a hunting gun. It holds 1 inch or less groups at 100 yards with 3 different bullet weights so far. It holds 2.5 inch groups at 200 yards with the 100 grain bullets. I didn't load enough of the lighter bullets to test at the longer range.
I have tested 100 grain, 87 grain, and 75 grain in it so far. I have some 55 grain bullets coming.
It hates Remington factory loads with 100 grain core locks. 4 inches at 100 yards. That worried me until I shot my handloads in it.
While not the greatest glass, the scope appears to be solid so far. It adjusts well and holds point of aim. There is some slop in the adjustment knobs but once set, it doesn't move.
The trigger breaks at 5lb. No creep and a clean break. Since this is a hunting rifle, that is not a terrible trigger.
Stock is synthetic. Barrel channel is fully free floated. Very easy to carry and seems to handle well so far. With the 243 there isn't much recoil.
I don't care much for the box magazine but it works so I will put up with it.
This is my 5th Savage rifle and all have been good to great shooters.

Been in a carry pistol mode lately. Picked up a LNIB KelTec 3AT for $90! I'm not a fan of KelTecs, but was looking at a LCP Custom to put in layaway before they are all gone and it caught my eye. I liked the long and steady trigger and it "felt" solid. So got it. It's worn from carrying on the outside, but looks like it was never shot inside. Been flawless and I carry it on my right jean pocket on a clip. Spare mag goes in my watch pocket.

Couldn't resist a really good deal on a Parker Hale 98 mauser sporter with detachable magazine in .25-06 a few days ago. Came complete with a 3x9 Leupold mounted in Leupold base and rings, a couple of boxes of factory ammo, and a bunch of fired brass. Took it up to our local range on Saturday and used it to beat up on our 200 yard steel gong with boring regularity ... and that was just with some of the factory ammo that came with it.

HaHa! We always put the day before the month. for a second or two, I thought that you meant the second of August, and my mind said 'wow! that sucks' but the penny dropped after a second or two. Go back to sleep Mick.
