My tomatoes , peppers and eggplant are not growing like they should......still small.
Prepped the beds well , amended the soil , fertilized everything but all the plants are still small . I first noticed the stunted growth with the Red Okra I plant every year , now the peppers and tomatoes are showing stunted growth .
I'm wondering if I got the Nematodes , I have planted those plants in the same beds for 3-4 years.... just going to have to take a soil sample and send to the LSU Agriculture Center and see just what is going on. Mother Nature is tough !

something is going on this year, all the wild fruit is flowering mach later than usual. i believe it is more than the weather. it is good that they are flowering late as we may get a huge choke cherry crop and i will make many pints of choke cherry syrup for the winter.

If you suspect nematodes, spray the ground around the base of the plants moderate to heavy with Neem (follow instructions) just before a rain.
This will help control these pests.

    Pesticide Edit
Formulations made of neem oil also find wide usage as a biopesticide for organic farming, as it repels a wide variety of pests including the mealy bug, beet armyworm, aphids, the cabbage worm, thrips, whiteflies, mites, fungus gnats, beetles, moth larvae, mushroom flies, leafminers, caterpillars, locust, nematodes and the Japanese beetle.[4][5] Neem oil is not known to be harmful to mammals, birds, earthworms or some beneficial insects such as butterflies, honeybees and ladybirds (ladybugs in US English) if it is not concentrated directly into their area of habitat or on their food source. It can be used as a household pesticide for ant, bedbug, cockroach, housefly, sand fly, snail, termite and mosquitoes both as repellent and larvicide.[2] Neem oil also controls black spot, powdery mildew, anthracnose and rust fungi.

Got tomatoes in 2 nights ago, had a light frost and now they are maybe dead... will give them until Sat to perk up then I guess I am shopping for 42 tomato plants... peas are finally coming up, bok choy is happy with the cold weather, radishes are up, I thought I could see some carrot fronds poking up today... planted strawberry seeds and nothing, not one has germinated yet... but it has only been 2 weeks. Need to get onions and beans in as soon as it dried out a bit, garden is so wet I hate walking in it and packing the soil down.

i encourage all of you rural gardeners to start collecting old rusted out cattle watering tanks. fill them with rotted manure from the cattle or horse pens or what ever critters you raise. grow carrots leeks and onions in those compost filled tanks, also peppers and tomatoes. mine are going nuts and i just weed once in the spring and keep them moist and they just grow better than any ground soil they could be in. they are easy to cover if there is a danger of frost and again grow better than in soil on the ground. also i grow raspberries, strawberries and rhubarb this way. they love it also. you ranchers and farmers and smaller country gardeners, collect all the rusted out cattle watering tanks you can and grow grow grow. also one one thing, you should see my scallion bunching onions and how they grow in these tanks. every one like scallions with a meal.

I've been focusing on longer term than the average summer garden.
I started the daily harvest from the mulberry tree yesterday. I got two cups of mulberries yesterday with the aid of a 8ft step-ladder. I should be able to gather at least a half-cup a day for the next two weeks off this one tree. They will be frozen daily and once the harvest is complete, they will be made into either a mulberry jam or an apple-mulberry jelly, I haven't decided which depending on the total harvest.
The grape vines (Concord, Catawba and Chambourcin) are thriving this second year in the soil at the retirement house with several clusters on each which will lead to hopefully a nice grape jelly. (I don't do wines but I like table grapes and home-made jellies.) There are two trees near the house that are covered in wild grape vines that I intend to harvest as well. The Seedless Hinrod grape vine got moved to another area of the back yard this weekend. I think it needs more sunlight than the other vines so I'm going to separate them. The three Ayers and Bartlett Pear trees have set their first pears after being planted last year and the Pink Lady and Gala apple trees (also planted last year) have a good bunch of apples on them as well. Last year, I got 4 apples of those two young trees. This year the harvest will be a lot better. I've added two cherry trees (Bing and Shasta) to the backyard orchard this spring but won't see a harvest this year but have good hopes for next.
And for the vegetables. I've got cabbage, onions, summer squash, zuchini, spaghetti squash, brussel sprouts, peppers, tomatoes, cilantro and carrots and radishes growing right now in containers on the back porch and a small section of the back yard near the koi ponds.

WOW , talk about strawberries ! I had no idea they grew that far North.

While going to Southeastern Louisiana University I lived in the small town of Ponchatoula , which claimed itself as the "Strawberry Capital Of the World" , don't know if that's true but a lot of berries are still grown around there. Each year I pick up a flat or two and make jars of homemade strawberry jam. Homemade with sweet ripe berries will make you throw rocks at the store bought stuff...even Smucker's .

Looks like you going to have a heck of a crop...awesome !

The last couple of years I've had people coming over to pick and it seems to work out pretty good, so, I'm doing a 'U-pick' here at the homestead.

In years past I've been taking my produce to the local Farmers Market and I will from time to time but, it become a trying task for me to haul everything to the Market.
I figure that I can still make money selling my wares for a discount and save my back at the same time.

Believe it or not one of the biggest money maker is cabbage, I have made more money on cabbage then any other vegetable. The seed is cheap and it grows in any soil (with a little help) and its easy to harvest.

I have strawberries started in MN! I found an alpine variety that grows from seed.

My Chinese cabbage was wiped out by some bug...

Hickory , I'll have to agree with you on both items !
Picking strawberries is a back breaking proposition even for a young man. If I picked a flat now I would be proud of myself!

Cabbage is easy to grow. Way Too easy, I planted some once, and discovered you can only eat and give away so much and I don't do that sour kraut thing. I would cut a head and another would grow ....the stuff just wouldn't stop !

my garden is growing like nuts this year. i pray alot to keep the hail off of it. last week a large tornado touched down 1/4 mile east of me. did no harm but could have. went back up right away. 135 miles south of me a tornado tipped a coal train engine on its side. 30 funnels were spotted in western ne. that evening. my peppers are the best they have ever been here. the weather plus the fish fertilizer i put on them makes them grow as they are. ill probably get 1000 carrots from one large round cattle tank full of compost. they will be long and huge. my leeks are large already and they have until fall to keep growing. pole beans are starting to climb their poles. flowers are doing well this year also.

Vacation while crops are in the ground?

It was wet this spring and everything got in late. Everything was watered & weeded before I left and my daughter keeping a loose eye on things. Will be back to the swamp tomorrow morning.

Neither one, I'm not on that kind of vacation.

Three days of 120 degree weather were more than the cucumber plants could endure. I should have planted them much earlier.

Colder than normal here, wetter too, garden is not doing well except for the salad greens. They love this weather.
