our frost free date here in the NC piedmont (zone 7b) is supposedly April 1st. Since then we've had at least 2 freezing nights. I've have resigned myself not to plant anything that grows in Summer until May 1st, when the soil is over 60 degrees and zero chance of frost. usually it catches the early plantings very quickly anyhow.

and when it comes to corn, the later the planting, the more bugs I avoid in the late summer. We seem to always have the perpetual indian summer here with the first frost coming Nov 15 and many times around thanksgiving.

planting carrots tomorrow. got two more old cattle water tanks to fill with compost tomorrow. a rancher stopped by on the way to the dump with them and gave me first shot at them. cant turn down a gift from God. all my root crops will be in by tomorrow evening.

I'm going to try planting carrots this weekend in an old kiddie pool with soil piled a couple inches above the top. Got 10 different tomato plants doing well in 1/2 plastic 55 gallon drums with concrete wire cages.

Also going to get a couple kinds of okra and cucumbers planted this weekend. Also, a couple eggplant, and a climbing spinach called Malabar.

This is only my 3rd year to garden. We had a garden as big as a half a football field growing up, and it has taken me 40 years to get over hating all the hard work!

I really love watching the progress of the tomatoes. They are beautiful plants, and I love the way they smell. Plus, of course, you just can't get good tomatoes at the store.

I finally got my early crops planted.
Broccoli, lettuce, carrots and spinach.
We are having a record rainy year here in southern Oregon.
Our normal annual rainfall is 61".
We are at 107" for the year and still raining....dale

I now have 44 tomato plants started, cabbage, bok choy cabbage, sweet pepper, allepo hot peppers, brussels sprouts, broccoli, winter squash, watermelon started...

I have my cabbage and brussel sprouts and rhubarb planted the next time the garden is dry it is onions and peas. We are maybe going to see some snow again today, strange sprint here in idaho

Today is Good Friday , got my two raised beds prepped and after lunch we going to get some plants.
I always buy too many, I don't have much room but I want to try everything I see. One year I wanted A cucumber plant....they came in a tray of six , I did not expect all 6 to grow into huge vines...I got more cucumbers than Carter has Little Liver Pills , I'll never plant cucumbers again...NO cucumbers !

My Rhubarb is up and about 4" tall, hops have suddenly started and are 6" tall, and the garden is full of volunteer lettuce from last year!

Yesterday I got my little garden planted. Brandywine , Celebrity and Roma Tomato's, Jalapeno and Gypsy Peppers , and Black Beauty eggplant (I liked stuffed eggplant...it's a Southern thing).

Many years ago, (late 60's early 70's) my Dad would plant a tomato called "Moneymaker" (I just remember the neat name) but I haven't seen plants locally , seeds are available , anyone familiar with this old variety , worth the effort ?

baker creek sells moneymaker tomato seeds. says it good for your hot and humid climate. the tomato is very red and smooth and set tomatoes under any conditions.

I just picked my first 2 tomatoes of the year. April 18 beats my old early 1st tomato record of April 27. I planted these tomatoes on Feb 15 and kept them covered for 4 weeks.

Yes I grow Moneymaker Tomatoes every year.always successful and a good taste,i have 50 plants 4 inches high in 3 inch Pots.I have lots more in a tray to be potted on.I plant 10 into the Greenhouse in 8 inch Pots with a large hole cut in the bottom and a 6 foot cane in each.All the others will go to Family members and neighbours.I have Jalapenos and Cayenne Peppers to be grown on in the Greenhouse.Outside I have Radishes,Beet,Lettuce,Onions and Leeks.All small at this stage.

col4570, the leeks are such a wonderful plant arnt they? we ate 150 of them this winter in leek potato and ham soup. ive got 300 in the garden now and will put some more in in a month. do you have pest problems on gooseberries in england. mine are about leafed out and if i dont spray them a little tiny green worm would kill them all every spring. ill spray soon and that takes care of the problem.that little green worm doesnt go to any other kind of plant, just the gooseberries. currents are worm free.

Rained out and I need to get frost resistant crops in(lettuce, kale, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, carrots, potatoes... need to buy onion sets yet). Cabbage starts are 4 inches tall, both the normal and the dwarf bok choy(I may be eating that by end of May!). I need 4 days rain free to dry the ground out.

The "ultimate" in container planting....and recycling to boot. Nice score.
We had a cool snap the last few nights have been in mid 50's , this had better not stunt my tomatoes , peppers and eggplant I put in Good Friday!

going to get to 25 tonight but i covered all my hardy root crops. they should do ok. nothing else goes in the ground untill the end of may.
