tomato space is 15'x30'... if the roots are holding moisture I am not to concerned... gives me footing too instead of mud. This has been the wettest summer in a long time here. I can get the bulk area with the Honda FG110 mini tiller. If you have never used one they are great for weeding rows and tilling raised beds and even tilling the entire garden! 9" tines so it is slow going on a large garden but I just do a section at a time over 4-5 days and it gets done. I used it to dig the potato bed by making 2 passes, raking the dirt to the side, then making 2 more passes to dig down almost 2'...
Weeds looks like I'm going to hay the garden this year, lost a lot in the flooding still have a few more onions, and 4 sweet peppers that won't die, they produced all last year and still going, most of the leaves have dropped off, but it's got new blooms on it now, what the flooding didn't get the deer have eaten, about midnight tonight iI ran a doe off the front deck??? I guess she smells the rabbit's feed??

My pepper plants are finally producing. It's going to be weeks before I can pick any. But I'm happy they set some fruit. I pulled the cages off of them and had to put them back on an hour later. Roots are shallow and they started to tip over, oh well.
Didn't get many green beans. Enough for one meal. Don't know if there will be enough to can this year
Our string beans did real well this year, got 3 good sized meals for two out of about 8 plants. The Tomato plants (4 Roma and 1 Cherry and 2 beef steak) are doing well, we lost one from some sort of grub that eats the roots, not cut worms either. The Cherry grew to a height of 8'+ before it fell over. I've been able to pick just a couple of roma's and a dozen beef steak, and more then a few cherry but there's lots on all the plants. We planted in composted chicken dung and wood shavings, out soil isn't anything to write home about, we tried and failed for years till we grew things in tubs.
Here's a picture, I'm just over 6' and just like the Cherry tomato the beef steaks fell over from growing to high.

You really have to keep cherry tomatoes in check. The cages I use are just shy of 6' tall. I let one go just to see what it would do. The top fell over when it hit 9'. I chop them of when they hit the top of cage now.
I canned four more points of green beans today. It's almost not worth getting the pressure cooker out but I don't want them to go to waste. I lost three plants this week. There are only three left in the first 2'x2' plot. The second plot came in better and is still going strong. It's raining now and I hope it keeps up for a few hours.
Made stuffed peppers for dinner tonight. Gonna be eating it as much as possible while I can
We lost our tomatoes to blight back in June with wet, cold weather but now we are being overwhelmed with cucumbers, zucchini (of course), lettuce and cabbages. Our winter squashes look great so far.
I blanch and freeze green beans in foodsaver pint bags. Meal portions. Reheat in a little bacon fat and garlic... or wrap a bundle in bacon and toss on the smoker until the bacon is cooked through.
Stuffed peppers freeze well. I had a good crop and stuffed both bell and gypsy peppers. What we didn't have for supper went into the freezer for a quick , after working all day I don't want to cook , meal . Warm up in micro-wave or regular oven , they are better after freezing!
One way to solve the what to do with all these peppers problem .

My garden is officially done for the year. I pulled up the potatoes today. I think I had five potato plants. I know a few didn't grow and I forget how many their were. Got a five gallon bucket full. 3/4 is reds and the other 1/4 are Yukon golds. Not a lot but it's enough for a couple good meals. Will be nice to make mashed potatoes from them come Thanksgiving.
I tilled everything under today. Might seed it w/ winter rye tomorrow. Not sure yet. I may wait until next weekend to do so. The garden did well this year considering I'm only home on weekends. It will be expanded in size next year since it appears I need more area just for green beans.
I'm still waiting for a hard freeze.
I have cowpeas in my portion of my neighbor's garden, that's where I want to plant the garlic this fall, but I want to keep the cowpeas in til freeze...but I can't wait much longer?
On a PLUS note: He is going to let me use more space in his garden next year...I think? we're still in negotiation.
In my garden, I still have pepper plants with peppers on them and tomato plants with tomatoes on them.

Hard freeze took everything in my garden, we hit 30 last week.
Sure sorry that happened to you Mary.
Not sure I remember getting rain in October here, but it's raining right now.
We harvested a couple of dozen tomatoes a few days ago and will harvest another dozen or so in another week. Our first effort to grow corn was total failure. Took another crack at it and may see about 50% success. Got a dozen or so jalapeno peppers from the one plant we tried.
Looking forward to planting garlic and potatoes soon.

Dig the potatoes , Plant the garlic, and wait for the last of the lettuce to freeze out - Then we are done. Kept it going longer than usual this year
Being human is not for sissies.
Our garden spot is overseeded with rye to till under next spring. Lawn is turning yellow from falling leaves over the green brought on by the recent rain. It was welcome after a very dry summer.

The only fall/winter crop I plant is garlic.
Barely got my Music, Softneck Red, and Elephant garlic planted before we got 13"+ of rain....dale
The 30.04 inches we got in August combined with 80-90 degree days going into October seems to have reinvigorated the eggplant and pepper plants that were left in the garden . I thought they were done but they are putting forth another crop. If this global warming will delay a killing frost I'll have more peppers and eggplant. Need to check on the remaining tomato plants , those Roma's have been known to last into fall. Might be one more home grown BLT with cheese out there.
