    311 "Hen's Tooth"

    Folks,
I posted this on the Swap/Sell board without much luck.
A friend of mine is trying to come up with a breech-seated 30-30 boolit that matches the one described below. A friend of ours has two molds but doesn't want to part with them (understandable!) and we don't want to wear out his generosity by having him cast our boolits. If we found a suitable "donor mold" would it be worthwhile (and how much would it cost?) to turn the base band or shank to .315" in order to make a Pope-style boolit from a conventional mold, or to mill the base from a longer .315" mold? The mold I'm looking for is almost non-existent, so the next step is to have one custom made or modify an existing one. I could have done it myself a few months ago but my machine shop is gone.
Now that I think about it, the simplest fix might be to size a 160gr boolit to .311" add a gas check, then size the check to .315"
    Any thoughts?

This is a Pope-style boolit, 167 gr. with a .315" base band. You can see the 311403 on the Three Peaks web site, I believe the 308403 is the same, maybe just an older number.

Isn't this the pope bullet that is hand seated into the loaded cartridge case and then chambered?. Seems to me that within the last year or so I've read about such a critter but molds for this bullet when available command very high prices. Frank

In this case the bullet is seated into the chamber using a dummy case and the loaded case (powder and a wad) is seated behind it. You're right about them being hard to come by. They can be made but they aint cheap.
