    Boiled Peanuts

This isn't a recipe so much as an inquiry. Down here we eat both roasted and boiled peanuts. I was wondering in what other states you could find boiled peanuts, or better yet, where are they popular. For those of you that don't know, peanuts grow underground, and they are actually a type of legume (bean).

I'm not a big fan of boiled peanuts. Don't really care for raw peanuts either. Now salted in the shell and roasted I can eat enough that I can't stray far from the bathroom the following day.

While I haven't done peanuts even though we grew some one year when I was a kid I do boil my sunflower seeds in saltwater and roast in the oven. Taste just like store bought.

Baton Rouge , Louisiana....we do boiled. Can't wait for the new crop to come in , nice fresh green ones are cheap and plentiful. Mississippi does them too , there is a man that sells them just before you get to the Mississippi Welcome Center ,on the East side of the La.- Miss. state line , he has been there for decades... we always stop and buy some from him when heading East.

I grew up in S.C. and everybody ate them down there. Wife and I love them, haven't had any in a while.

I think boiled peanuts are purely a deep south thing, haven't seen them anywhere else.

Definitely not done in PA but sure wish they were. I love them Cajun spiced. I would like to order some green and try to make them. I love greens, grits, and corn bread too.

Believe it or not we have em up here in NY. Of course they're not very popular, matter o fact I only know of one old man that boils and sells em out front of his house.

I've found them in cans at Walmart. Heat and serve. Great stuff.

I love eating them, but they are few and far between here. I get some whenever I'm in GA or FL.

Wife and I boil them here in Indiana, but not many others do. We like to throw a crab boil bag in with them to give them a Cajun flavor every now and then. Good green nuts are hard to find here. I'm gonna start some plants in the house tomorrow so I can have them in September.

Most "boiled peanuts" you find on the side of the road or in the can are made from dried raw peanuts. These are not what we eat in the south.
The true boiled peanut is made from fresh raw peanuts. I'm lucky. My cousin grows peanuts mostly for peanut butter but about 4 acres of boiling peanuts. When my stash runs out, fresh from the grocery store will suffice. Plant to harvest is about 180 days, so you need a good long growing season.

1 gallon ziplock of raw peanuts
    3.5 Tablespoons of salt
    water to cover

Pressure cook for 45 minutes. Remove top when cool. Leave peanuts in the water until they sink.

I am proud to say that I have converted 6 Yankees to appreciate and crave a good boiled peanut.

    All boiled are not equal.
