    shooting GC boolits W/O GC's?

forgive my ingnorance...I've ordered 2 Lee TL 312 molds to last until the GB's come in.Mostly I shoot plinkin loads(under 1500 fps).
I understand that a GC boolit(without the gas check seated) will not perform as well as a PB boolit, but is it doable at lower velocities?

these are being shot in Mosins and Enfields..4 MOA rifles at best

thanks in advance for all advice

I have some rifles that shoot GC boolits without the gas checks quite well while other rifles the accuracy is bad without the gas checks.

    Swabbie,

In re-reading your question, I noticed you are asking about Plain Base versus Gas Check Base without Gas Check installed.

That being the case, I personally see no difference in performance between the two, unless the GC boolit without the GC functions like a "rebated boat-tail" boolit which should show SOME improvement in accuracy (over using a Plain Based boolit).

I'm not talkin bout speed or leading, that wasn't the question (below 1500fps or so).

Μολὼν λαβέ; approximate Classical Greek pronunciation [molɔ̀ːn labé], Modern Greek [moˈlon laˈve]), meaning "Come and take them" is a classical expression of defiance reportedly by King Leonidas in response to the Persian army's demand that the Spartans surrender their weapons at the Battle of Thermopylae.

They work fine if you keep them at 22lr vel. since in a sence they are like a heeled 22 bullet with out the GC I have very good results with the same boolit(155-312) with 5.5 -7.5 grs of Bullseye or 8-10 grs of Unique.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

I think it was Felix who said the primary issue is whether there's enough bearing surface in the drive bands left without the check. Some boolits don't have a lot of guidance in the bore with the check gone. I've shot some this way with good results, but they have relatively long bodies.

Not only me, but Bob (2.1) and John (BA) too. Not only bearing surface in question, but the missing lead for mo'betta' balance. Short boolits, like Ricochet says, will have significant problems remaining stable because of low velocity requirements. ... felix

Best results are going to be with PB bullets but decent results can be had if constrained to loads as RU mentions. If your 312 bullet is lighter than mentioned drop back to 3 - 3.5 gr bullseye.

    Swabbie,

I have shot the Rcbs 150 and the 311291 with out gas checks up to 1,400 f.p.s. and the accuracy was the same as with a gas check.

    on to my next question

I'll have 2 lee 6 cavity molds coming by this winter.is it practical to have some one bevel out the bottom of 3 of the cavities in each mold to cast PB boolits?
this would give me 3 cavities of each..I'm medically retired and got nothin but time,so speed isn't a real issue?

I shoot 311466 without a check all the time. 311284s also but I size them down to .301 and patch them back up with paper. NO leading, good accuracy ant any velocity.
