    Ruger 44 special issue

Recently fired my Ruger Bisley 44 special with some good Handloads, 8.3 grains power pistol and a 260 grain Keith boolit. Several times the cylinder latch spring came out, and tied the gun up until I could place spring back in notch in frame. Any remedies besides sending gun back to Ruger?

The cylinder latch spring came out?, or the cross pin didn't hold the base pin and it came out?

That is very common with Ruger single actions. Over the years, I have encountered many that did this and rather than replacing the cylinder pin, I would just take a file and work on the locking ring on the pin...making sure that there was adequate room for the crossbolt to seat well. That normally takes care of the problem and only takes 5 minutes.

I recommend these. They have a locking screw under the pin that locks it to the barrel for hard firing. I have one in my Ruger Flattop .44 sp. Kind of looks like a Kieth pin.

I own four Ruger single actions. An original Vaquero in .45 Colt, a Single Six, and two SSM's in .32 H&R Mag (4 5/8" and 6 ½"). The 6 ½" .32 is the only one that has done this and a Belt Mountain cylinder pin fixed it right up.

A round file (chainsaw file) as shoot-n-lead suggests is cheaper and will work just as well.

I don't think I was clear enough. Not the cylinder pin that is tying the gun up, it's the loading gate spring. its comes partially out of the frame where it it gives tension to the loading gate. It happened twice at my last range session. I only put down 18 rounds before being completely frustrated. I can carefully push back spring with a small screwdriver. Time to go back to Newport New Hampshire?

If you're comfortable disassembling the revolver, you may be able to tweak the end of the spring slightly to help alleviate this problem. Another possible workaround , if you're not already doing so, is to always load six rounds in the cylinder rather than five. I normally load five rounds, and although I've never (yet) experienced this problem it is fairly common with heavy loads. Hamilton Bowen recommends loading six rounds (or five and an empty case) to reduce the amount of room that the loading gate has available to flex, or move. Since I read his recommendation, I've taken to loading six rounds each time I shoot.

If that's the issue, I would send it back. I had to do that with mine, and asked for some attention to the action. Came back prefect.
