    Imr-7383...

Been doing lots of research on this site concerning the 308 Winchester and cast. So far so good…

Has anyone used IMR-7383 (Lot # RAD78L 47985) in this cartridge?...

I have used it in several cartridges with cast and my lot is slower than the IMR-4064 that the jug says to use as starting data…

Anyone used it with the 308 Winchester?...

    Thanks…BCB

I was given 8 jugs of this powder and would be interested in knowing how it does in 308 also.

My experience with IMR7383 indicates this powder is about as slow as IMR4831, as Jeff Bartlett indicates. Loaded in .308, 40 grains filled the case almost to top of neck. Velocity with a 147gr M80 bullet (slightly compressed) was about 2200fps. It is very bulky, and takes up a lot of room with not much weight. Seems to burn clean, and did cycle my Rem 742, but velocity was poor.

    Thanks for the info…

Good to know someone has tried it in the 308 Winchester…

The burn rate of my lot of 7383 is between H-414 and H-4831. At least this is the case with the 6.8mm SPC cartridge using a 128 grain boolit…

Yet, with the 30-30 and the 311041, 174 grains, it is right at the same burning rate as IMR-4350…

In the 7-30 Waters with the 287346 (135 grains) it is right at the burn rate of IMR-4064…

So, it does appear that 4064 data could be used as a starter…

But, I do think this powder might be a bit unpredictable so starting loads are critical to determining its burning rate in cartridges…

I’m hoping for it to be useful in the 308 Winchester with the 311041 or heavier boolits…

    Good-luck…BCB

According to my records, there are three (3) lot numbers of IMR7383 floating around. One lot was made by Radford, lot Rad78L- 47985, and two (2) lots by duPont, lot #48000, and 48001. The Radford lot burns the quickest, duPont 48001 a little slower, with 48000 as the slowest. My data uses the 48000 lot number.

I have just started using This powder. my first attempt was In 8mm lebel. I started using data for IMR4831 . reduced by 10% . . I was below the neck line . The load was Lite. . the rifle was French Model 1886

    NOT a loading recommendation, BUT . . .

    Lot # 48001

I used the Bartlett suggested 4831 minus 15% and found that recommended load data matched 4064 load data for my cartridge of interest almost every time.

    You may find something different.

My jug from Bartletts is the 48000 ... & 4064 data is the correct starting point in a .243 Win. Browning A-Bolt with a 100 gr. Hornady bullet. Very accurate and clean after you reach the point where burn is complete. Up until the complete burn happens it leaves particles in bore. Big Boomer

The comparison of 7383 with 4831 is by VOLUME, not by weight. The same jugs that hold 8 pounds of other surplus rifle powders hold 7 pounds of 7383. So the 15% reduction by weight sounds about right. I've used a great deal of it in .22-250, .30-06, 7.5X55 and the 1889 7.5X53 Swiss, 7.62X54R and 8X57. I've also used it for reduced loads in .300 Weatherby Magnum. With the exceptions of the old Swiss and the Weatherby, what works with mine in these midsize rifle cartridges with standard bullet weights is a 100% volume load or very close to it with no compression. Much less leaves a lot of unburned powder that gets in the action, said full load burns efficiently and gives modest ballistics with apparently mild pressures, and compressed loads spike very suddenly to higher velocities and pressures. I'll use a lot of this for a long time, but one has to remember that it won't give full velocity in most of these cartridges (only in the 1889 Swiss will it do that), it won't work well downloaded in the standard cartridges, it won't work satisfactorily in .45-70, and if you compress it it gets hot fast. It also is very sooty and forms a hard coke deposit in the throat that you have to clean out regularly. I've generally thought of mine as similar in velocity for charge weight to 4350, but I don't load 4350 down and am just comparing with data I've seen published for it. The 4350 comparison doesn't hold if you try to push it. In the .300 Weatherby I went with the lightest of starting loads I found in the 4895-4064-4320 group and stayed there, getting about 2200 FPS with 200 grain boolits.

This morning it was a mite chilly here in southern Ky. While eating breakfast I saw a small groundhog sunning itself on an old lumber pile about 150 yds. behind our house. The groundhog stayed where he was, taking in the sunshine. I went downstairs and got my .243 out and placed 1 round in the chamber - loaded with a Hornady soft-point over a moderate load of IMR 7383. Opening the basement door just a crack, I could see the groundhog clearly. I carefully took aim and held right at the top of its silhouette. Being careful with what hearing I have left, I pulled the batteries out (of my hearing aids). As the rifle went off, the groundhog flipped off the back side of the lumber pile. One less nuisance. Really like that IMR 7383 load in the .243. Big Boomer

I have been experimenting with IMR 7383 to work in my AR-15 chambered in 300 blackout with a pistol length gas system. It doesn't run the gun on it's own... not even at 106% case fill with a lee 230 gr. boolit. So I did some reading and found that people were "duplexing" this powder and wc860 in 45-70 govt. with some good results. So I called Jeff Bartlett and placed an order for a couple jugs of BR-5 (Unique equivalent) and IMR 7383. I started off by trying a case full of 7383, which didn't work, then I added 1 gr of BR-5 to the bottom of the case and reduced the 7383 by 1 gr. and put it on top of the pistol powder before seating the 230 gr boolit. I kept the case fill at around 103%. After some trial and error and shooting several rounds with my butthole puckered really tight, I managed to get 3.2 gr. BR-5 below 9.3 gr of IMR 7383 to run my gun and push the pill out at an average velocity of 1248 fps. with a standard deviation of around 12 fps. More experimenting is needed, but I made a rather rough looking video of my trials and results. The video includes chronograph data.
