I like the RCBS 30-180FN GC cast from WW and H4895. check out your Lyman manual for charge weights.

I have had good luck with Lee molds,170 and 150 grain flat point. The 170 gives good groups with 10.2 gr unique the 150 likes 16.5 gr IMR4198 ,both boolets use gas checks and Lee liquid alox. I put two or three hand fulls in a zip type freezer bag with a few squirts of alox,zip it and squish the bag till allare coated,set over night on wax paper. Also use the 150 gr without a gas check over 6 gr. unique.

I shoot two Winchester 94's....one a regular rifle and the other a SRC. There are lots of loading combinations to choose from, but here are the ones that work well for me. RCBS Mold #30-150 and either Lyman #311291 or #311041. The RCBS is a 150 grain boolit, the 311291 and the 311041 are around 170 grains. For rifles with tubular magazines some folks prefer the 041 to the 291 because it has a flat (meplat) point. All are gas check design and perform very well. I use up to 31 grains of IMR 3031 which will yield just about factory velocity and shoots for me as well or better than "store bought ammo". You can try different sizing diameters and or start with around 25 grains and work up while watching the group size. Its a relatively easy cartridge to load for. Just keep the casings trimmed to the right length and use a bit of roll crimp for the tubular mag if you have one. LLS

So I gave it to a 12 year old for his first Deer Rifle.

I loaded some 311291's ahead of Surplus powder (about = to IMR 4198) for 1800 FPS and it shoots lights out with iron sights.

The Mag cost $35 from Sportsman's Guide.

Oh Well, I guess it was too expensive, but the young hunter Thanks Y'All for not buying it.

I had a Marlin 30-30 a while back. I found that the barrel shot best with .310 bullets, which I sized after casting from Lee molds for .312 bullets. They ended up working much better than the .309 bullet molds I found. More accurate without leading.

I used both the 155 grain spitzer and the 185 grain round nose to good effect. Beware that the 155 grain bullet can't be used in a levergun.

I don't think Lee offers a .310 sizer. I lapped mine up on a lathe.

It was karma that nobody bought it. I am sure it has brought more pleasure serving that kid than it would have ever done with the members here. One day that kid will tell the story of his first rifle, his first kill and the man who taught him everything about reloading with fond reflection. I think you have done a great justice to that rifle, that kid, the sport of shooting and reloading. Your few words posted here has brought back fond memories of my mentor. Thanks for the reminder.

DITTO on the IMR 3031 and the Lee c309-170 fn t shoots great. Some one here suggested it to me. Like previously said, work from 25 grains and watch your groups tighten into one hole.

Shot the Savage 340 I picked up last winter for the second time yesterday...first time out was more to fire-form brass and get a feel for the gun. Weather was pretty crappy...ugly overcast and 25 mph winds gusting to 30 or 35...but, at least, I had the range to myself.

22.5 gr IMR 4198 with filler (grits) to the bottom of case neck under a Lyman 311041 cast from 3 parts #2 alloy/1 part linotype and sized .310. Even with gusting winds, I was able to shoot consistent 1" - 1 1/4" groups at 50 yards. Was going to chrono some of those, but tripod kept blowing over. Ken Watters lists 22.0 gr IMR4198 producing 1868 fps from a 20" carbine so I imagine I'm pushing close to 2000 fps with 22.5 gr. in my 22" bolt gun. Btw...48 rounds of this load left practically no lead fouling; half dozen passes with a Shooter's Choice (lead remover formula) on a GI bronze brush and the fifth or sixth dry patch came out clean. Think I've got me a real boolit gun!!

I like the 130 gr NEI PB boolit over 8.5 gr of Unique to a accurate, economical load.

I am willing to bet your 340 has the same twist as my Savage 219, and it REALLY shoots with 7 grs. of Bullseye and the 311291 GC, sized to .312". 10 grains of Unique shoots just as well, but the BE load is cheaper. Have fun.

i think this my be my cast boolet deer gun just wish it was a left hand bolt thanks for the info clint

I dont have any of my data anymore as I sold the rifle last year, but I could put anything, ANYTHING, in a 30-30 case and fire it from that rifle into a 1" or less group at 50 yards. I shot everything from 110gr jacketed HP's to 192gr gaschecks. Trailboss was fun for plain base bullets and IMR 4198 was good with gaschecked bullets.

I sold it because I couldnt stand it. It was just to ugly and shot to good for what it was. There wasnt anything it wouldnt shoot well so that was no fun.
