    J.E.S. Reboring

Does anyone know what the process JES uses when he rebores a barrel and I will assume that he removes the barrel from the action when he does the work.

I don't believe he did with mine. Have you tried calling him?

    .

If Jes answered his phone, he'd be too busy answering questions to do any work - I would suggest just sending him the barreled action (along with funds & a specific work request) and let him do his thing.

I am thinking about having a 270 rebored to 35 Whelan. Does anyone know how much barrel wall thickness he requires after he is done?

This barrel has a pretty thin profile. I thought I read some where that he had a minimum requirement.

Last pic is 200 yds ...4 shots on left then I adjust scope for a center shot

should not be a problem .. JES did a 7-08 to a 358 Win for me.. It was a sporter barrel in the beginning
now a 1-14 3 groove That shoots wonderful as above posted targets show

Just got my Marlin 30AS back from JES yesterday. He rebored it to 356 Win, chopped the barrel and mag tube and dovetailed the mag hanger eliminating the front barrel band. His work is exceptional ,reasonable and he has the fastest turn around time of any gunsmith I ever worked with. I would recommend him 110% !

So let's say I had a 6MM barrel, straight taper target contour. I send him this barrel only, and want it bored to 30 caliber 12 twist. I'll take care of the chamber and fitting. Is this doable and what would it cost, roughly?

According to his web site posted above he starts at 338 but would call him to be sure and get pricing

Jes, and all other reputable re-bore specialists, require a barrel thick enough to have a barrel wall thickness of .125" @ the muzzle after the re-bore is done.

    That translates to: .125" + .125" + .358" (for a re-bore to .35cal) - a minimum barrel O.D. @ the muzzle of .610" (+/-).

Sometimes, when a thin barrel's O.D. is smaller (my M-70FW measured only .500"), a thicker barrel wall can be had by shortening the donor barrel enough to result in a muzzle O.D. of .600" @ the shorter length - but, since most folks would want to keep the original bbl length (say, 22", 24", etc, etc), YMMV.

Jes' prices for reboring are on his website: http://www.35caliber.com/2.html

He states on his website that he's set up to rebore barrels from .223 cal & up, with a re-bore to at least .338" (the minimum result/size he's set up for).

Several years ago I called Jes and his wife answered. She then put him on the phone and we talked for 10 or 15 minutes. He was very receptive and freely offered his opinion.

Can verify that Jesse will indeed take the time to answer any questions that you have regarding re-boring. Lots of good info on his site including the answers to some questions that hadn't occurred to me.

I don't know the process he uses either, but he charges more for four or five grooves than for three, which sounds like it might be cut rifling. It becomes more likely if he will give a choice of rifling twist, which isn't mentioned.

If it was button rifling, there is good reason to avoid doing it with barrels tapering to a small muzzle diameter - more than small all the way, like a bore lining tube. It changes the extent to which the barrel springs larger, after the passage of the button.

JES rebored a Remington 700 .243 to .358 for me (3groove) and the first 100 yd group with Sierra 200 gr RN measured 3/4" for 3 shots. Nuff said! Best, Thomas.
