Mary's right -146.2 is what that comes out to. I'd say someone is trying to make air time.

It was almost record breaking if the -99 degrees was Fahrenheit. It's 55F in fairbanks. BTW
We need somebody/something to keep the government (cops and bureaucrats too) HONEST (by non government oversight).

Every "freedom" (latitude) given to government is a loophole in the rule of law. Every loophole in the rule of law is another hole in our freedom. When they even obey the law that is. Too often government seems to feel itself above the law.

We forgot to take out the trash in 2012, but 2016 was a charm! YESSS!

Just south of Winipeg on the ND side. I've seen some stupid cold, went for a 6 mile walk at -37 once. 3 miles to a bar on fri night for smokes, a human face, and a beer in about that order. I had good cold weather gear but it was still stupid.

A single mistake, a fall, trip sprain an ankle could have been life threatening.

Winters have been too warm around here lately, not keeping the riff raff out.

    Weather by photoshop?

There is no doubt they had a blizzard but the accounts I listened to were saying 70 mph winds and no mention of temps and when one goes to the Weather Channel or the Weather Network as in the original post I am just not seeing any support for that first graphic's temps.

I seem to remember a picture a few years ago of a thermometer sign that had went haywire and was showing -99.
The record is right around -80 for the US at least, but thinking that might be for North America. They think the record was broken iirc three years ago at Jim River, but it turns out the latest and greatest official thermostat FROZE at 79 below. lol

Whoa! And I thought it was cold HERE! The humidity here really acts like a heat sink, and sucks up all the heat you've got in you very quickly, but still, it's NEVER been THAT cold here, and I for one am HAPPY about that!

Sometimes the weather channel puts up stuff like that that is just wrong and a glitch. I used to go snowshoeing -30 quite often at home. Good wool clothes and no problem. -40 and it hurts to breath so better cover your mouth but still not much problem. 40 degrees and I'd be outside chopping wood in a tshirt. Nothing special just genetics I think. Luckily cold never bothered me much. Eveyone is different, though.
Lowest temp lower 48 was Rogers Pass, MT at -70. I was just looking at that place on google earth for some reason. Must have read a story about it during the last cold snap.

On this point, I'm pretty sure I'm not going outside if a hole opens in the atmosphere and it hits -100f. They don't call it Winterpeg for nothing!

Obviously, some sort of glich in their system...........otherwise I wouldn't be here. Neither would a lot of others, as well.

When it get's that cold, fire freezes at -95C.

No, I don't think it is cold where I live. My weather station showed 96 degrees, yesterday and it is 94 degrees at 3:46pm (right now). The sensor is in the shade, near the top of the porch, but it felt like a mild summer day.

It rarely gets below freezing here, and I am thankful for that. The coldest I have experienced was -10 f while wearing shorts. I had to repair a light fixture inside a walk in freezer.

I'm over in Odessa for a few more day's and 71 it wasn't.
I have had my coat on, off and on, the last few nights.
I think it's hitting about 50-f here which is far above the -8 with a light snow falling the morning I left home.
