    30-06

a real good friend of mine gave up on hunting deer because of throat cancer. it has been taken out(radiation, chemo and surgery) but his right arm doesn't go above his head anymore(surgery took out muscles from his neck and shoulder). he tried shooting from his left arm and left eye but that didn't work. recoil from reduced loads using hornady/seirra don't work either, it smacks him a little to hard. i want to find him a round that doesn't kick so he can go hunting again.
today i was putting on my stock for my 30-40 krag, when it hit me!!! i was thinking jacketed bullets, when all the while i should have been thinking cast boolits!!! i'm using a 165gr ranch dog over h4198(25.5gr) in my krag, which does NOT kick. ok, it does a little but not enough to move me or notice it.

his rem m700 in 30-06 and a 165gr ranch dog could be it. i know his hunting range will be greatly reduced(say 150 yards with the m.v. at around 1800fps.) but that shouldn't be a problem. 40-50 yards is what he shoots deer at. we'll give him 150 yards tho.

i've found rel7, 4198 and unique(lyman's reloading handbook 49th ed); all of these powders i do have. and i do have trail boss, i never used it in the '06, what is tb's muzzle velocity? i really like unique but the other two powders(rel7 & 4198) might do it too.
what other powders(reduced) with a 165gr rd in the 30-06 go about 1800fps+/-?

For low recoil, recreational plinking loads you could use a soft, plainbased bullet or a gaschecked design without the gascheck, and about 8-9 grains of Unique or 12-13 grains of Alliant #2400 with your 165-grain Ranchdog bullet. These will be about 1200 fps.

For a hunting load suitable for deer within 150 yards 35 grains of 3031, 4895, 4064, Varget or RL15, or 30 grains of RL7, or 28 grains of 4198 with the same bullet gaschecked and run no harder than about 13 BHN will approximate .30-30 ballistics and recoil and give good performance on deer if you use a flatnosed bullet.

lonegun1894, i wish i could get ahold of 2400!!! it is like unobtainium 'round here!!! i would really like to buy 2400 cuz i could load 30-40 krag, 444 marlin and 45-70.

outpost75, i can load up 16.5gr Compressed of unique with a 165gr rd to get around 1800fps(lyman reloading) but i just don't like compressed loads. i don't know why, i just stay away from them. i do like the rel7 and 4198 loads!!! my ranch dogs are about 12bhn.

i do have a little bit of imr3031(about a 1/4 of lb, maybe less), i could try it.

hopefully cast boolits can work for him.

What part of PA are you in? I know where there is 2400 in SW, PA and Unique, Bullseye, and just about every other powder.

One old trick is to load 30-30 bullets in a 06 down to 30-30 velocities, say 2200 for a 150 grain bullet. When my daughter was younger I loaded some 30-30 150 grain Core Lok in her 300 Savage down maybe 2400 and they killed deer. Don't overlook the 125/130 grain varmit bullets laoded down either as at the lower velocities they will not over expand. I would not be afraid to try my Lee 150 grain cast loaded down either.

    northmn,
i did try a 170gr sierra flat nose with 42.0gr(i think, i'll have to check) of imr4895 that goes about 2300fps. my friend did a 3 shot group(about 1 1/2" at 100 yards) and it still "kicked" him more than he likes. i thought about a 125gr seirra flat nose hollow point but i haven't gotten to it yet.(works great in my 30-30)

While we are talking about loads and recoil `kick`, nobody has said a word about getting a 1" thick `Decelerator recoil pad` or a `Limb Saver` put on the rifle.Robert

Here's a link to some 30-06 Trail boss data.

    http://www.imrpowder.com/PDF/Trail-Boss-data.pdf

Looks like you'd be limited to 1400 fps. give or take. You have a few good ones already (Unique, Re7 and IMR4198). IMR4227 could be used also .

    hardcast,
whoops!!! i never even thought of that! i'll have to tell him...

    mac60,
oh well, trail boss is out of the picture...unless pure lead or a 40:1 is used in the 165gr ranch dog mould. i'll have to think about it. i'm getting to like unique tho. if it wasn't for the compressed load, 1800fps+/- would be a great load. i'll have to try 15.5gr and 16.0gr of unique, maybe it won't compress.

the 311316, with 2400 behind it will do well.

it's about 115 gr bullet, no recoil and plenty enough for deer under 100yds. (at least the small ones around here 150lbs is a big deer)
