KS Gov signs NFA guns approval bill

I was quite amazed that our Dem Gov signed the bill to make machine
guns, sawed off shotguns and silencers legal in Kansas if you go thru
the Federal 6 month background process and pay a fortune. Apparently
there were enough votes to override her veto and she was overridden
with the CCW bill a couple years ago, and no bad things happened with
that one, so I think she decided to avoid looking weak.

Not that I care about MGs or sawed off shotguns, but a silencer seems
kinda neat, but I wonder what one would cost?

In any case, a tiny step fwd for gun rights, even if I can't afford a MG or
    the ammo to shoot it.

    Bill
If it was easy, anybody could do it.

Silencers only help with the noise generated by the explosion of the powder but will do nothing to silence the sonic crack of the bullet breaking the sound barrier. That is why the 45 acp is a favorite to silence, it uses a sub-sonic load but has the know down of the large diameter heavy slug.

Cmon guys. It's an election year. If Billary or Okbama gets in, you can mount your machine gun on a tricycle. You just won't be able to buy any micro-stamped, micro-coded, micro-managed ammunition for it..................Period.

They'll do whatever it takes today to make themselves appear good for tomorrow.

    Just the facts.........

The process for getting NFA items is not typically 6 months. As an owner of many NFA items (machine guns, short barreled rifles, supressors and AOW's - any other weapon such as a 6" barreled pump 20 ga shotgun - a Serbu Super Shorty - what a fun toy!) I can assure you that the process is typically only 90 days or so. Submit the 2 sets of fingerprints and photos and paperwork to your local chief, they sign off, then you submit the paperwork to the ATF (along with your check for $200 or $5 - depending on what is being transferred) where they check you out.
I suppose it COULD take 6 months but I would be screaming if that happened to me. I once had a supressor take four months to clear and I finally had to have my Senator call the ATF. Once he got to the person at the ATF the approval was the next day!
On another matter, supressors are great for SUBSONIC ammunition. The bullet itself, if it is faster than the speed of sound, will make a crack as it breaks the sound barrier. If you keep the ammo subsonic, it can be very quiet. Not "Hollywood quiet" like in the movies, but fairly quiet.
The major difference is whether the gun fires from an open bolt or not. An open bolt gun will have a lot of blowback and will be louder than a closed bolt gun. The Uzi SBR is the quietest gun I own with a can on it. The MACs are OK (open bolt) but don't try them without muffs, even with a can.
The supressors are a $200 tax to transfer as well as the machine guns and SBR's. The AOW's are only a $5 tax stamp.
    Hope this helps.

Glad to hear you got something good for gun owners in Kansas. Here in Missouri we still can't own a silencer. I sure would like to go varmint hunting with a silencer. It would make double and triple kills possible.

    PEDANT MODE:

They ain't "silencers". They're "suppressors" or "moderators".

"The AOW's are only a $5 tax stamp. " Ok I know it may seem silly but what is an "AOW"?

It is "Any Other Weapon". That is a class of firearms that encompasses all the weird stuff like pen guns and pistol grip short barrel shotguns. The rules are very strange, but you cannot just hack the barrel off a shotgun and call it an AOW unless it comes with a pistol grip.
Very weird stuff in this category. My favorite is the 20 ga Serbu Super Shorty pump. 6" barrel 3 shot pump shotgun. They make them in 12 ga 3" but I am too much of a wuss to shoot that one so I bought the 20ga 3".
Google Serbu Super Shorty and you can see the gun.

Was at a machine gun shoot once when one of the class 3's brought out the short barrelled 870 rem pump (AOW). Back then, there was a load out on the market called Blammo-Ammo's Dragon Breathe. Must have been mostly magnesium in the payload. The first shot sent a shower of white hot sparks/fire/attention getter into a about a 30 degree "cone" from the muzzle.

    IT WAS QUITE IMPRESSIVE!!!

Someone jokingly said, you didn't want to use any of those for self defense if you lived in a trailer. I really couldn't understand the difference that would make, except for a little more inclosed space than normal - but I definetely couldn't disagree.

Actually, TRANSFERRING an AOW is only $5. MAKING an AOW costs you $200.

RE Dragon's Breath. Cool toy. Only thing it's good for is Blinding Jackboots in NVGs and scaring away Bears (singed nose/flash blind)

Good enough reason to own them for me!
