Call them and ask. I think they are down there in TX with you.

I am considering the <$200 one.

    The V3 is upgradable.

V3 Ballistic Chronograph in Hard Case

V3 Ballistic Chronograph in Hard Case
    $399.00 USD
    *plus tax

The MagnetoSpeed V3 ballistic chronograph kit was designed to be used on barrels and suppressors from 1/2 inch all the way up to 2 inches in diameter. In addition to the larger diameter tolerance, the V3 also has one inch more clearance in the blast zone to account for longer (up to 3" in most cases) muzzle brakes, flash hiders, etc.

MagnetoSpeed V3 features an improved designed with the following features:

    Improved Display
    Three-button menu system
    Battery options are; (1) 9-Volt or (2) CR123s
Easy access battery compartment, no need for screwdriver to swap batteries
Improved shooting modes, with the ability to now operate with air guns
    Downloadable firmware updates
Advanced data logging and troubleshooting capabilities
More compact and rugged display housing
    Rapid mode with rate-of-fire
    Redesigned Bayonet
Rugged strapping system; with metal buckle and triad thumb nut
Proven technology with updated sensor design
    New profile and color scheme
New bracket to allow for future alternative attachment options
    Dual data connection points

The Sporter is the basic version and I don't believe it is upgradable.

The MagnetoSpeed Sporter chronograph kit was designed to be used on barrels from 1/2 inch up to 1 inch in diameter. In can also accommodate muzzle brakes, flash hiders, etc, up to 2.7 inches in length. Ideal for contoured rifle barrels (sporter barrels) and long-barreled revolvers.

    MagnetoSpeed Sporter features

Simple, one-button cycling display (shows recent shot velocity and statistics, plug in to turn on)
    Battery : 9-Volt (included)
Easy access battery compartment, no need for screwdriver to swap batteries
    Three sensitivity settings for fine-tuning
Integral, quick-attach strapping system; with metal buckle and triad thumb nut
Proven technology with updated sensor design

Wow that is perfect, thank you so much for your efforts! Now I just need to decide. And put my other chrono up for sale probably.

If you don't need to chronograph semi-auto guns, those magneto speed are great units. My brother has one and it reads in line with my Oehler, basically always.

Very accurate little devices. And you don't have to worry about lighting!

Semi auto handguns...I can still use one for semi auto rifles. I have ARs in 5 (6?) different calibers so definitely want to test them. Dont have to worry about setting up on the public range either. It always holds up the line when you do that as they wont allow anyone in front of the line during target changes.

That's what decided me on the Magnetospeed. Now I just need to get some time to try it.

I can provide some input. I started with the cheaper version and hated it. First off, it feels cheap. They're both made of plastic, but the sporter feels 2nd rate China cheap. I was instantly disappointed in spending that much and having such a fragile looking Chrony.

So I sent it back and upgraded to the version 3. The full size one can be used on literally everything. I use it on my pistols and AR, suppressor, it works with shotguns too. I haven't used it with my muzzleloader, but I plan to.

I regularly see less than 10fps SD with my precision 308 loads that are sorted beyond belief and charge weighed on a 0.01gr accurate lab grade balance. I got SD of around 30 with the shooting Chrony with the same charges.

I have full confidence in my v3 and have since sold off my other Chrony. It is a well made piece of equipment that I would not hesitate to recommend. It hurts to spend that kind of money, but shooting at a public range is a nightmare with a traditional Chrony. I typically setup my v3 at home the night before so all I have to do is clip it on at the range (you have different spacers to adjust the height).

You can only use the sporter for rifles with narrow barrels and no suppressor, pistols, and it doesn't accept a rail for ARs. Do yourself a favor and get the v3. Buy once, cry once.
