    #5 Shot

A guy on the local craigslist has a 50lb bag of this (Lawrence brand chilled shot) for $50. Good price or no?

I'm beginning to dabble in shotgun loading and have some stuff for both 20 and 12 gauge. I don't shoot a lot of shotgun, but would like to do some squirrel and small game hunting, mainly with 20 gauge. Seems to me like 5 or 6 shot would be better for that than the real small shot you normally find 20 gauge shells loaded with (?).

I'm pretty sure 50 lbs would last me a very, very long time at the rate I will probably go through them. My rough math says that ought to be about 800 shells.

Yes and #5 is good size for Turkey and Pheasant if you are into that.

Excellent price though I only look at magnum shot not chilled so I not sure if there is really much difference but I pay $45/bag shipped to my door for Lawrence magnum shot.

#5 shot works well for knocking squirrels out of tall hickory or pecan trees.

My only concern is the 50 pound bag, I have seen a lot of shot bags in my life, the vast majority of them were 25 pound bags. If it is indeed a dollar per pound, it sounds like a good price these days.

I think the op meant two 25lb bags since no commercial manufacture sells shot in 50lb bags.

He said 50lbs, not sure what increments it's in. I'll give him a call and see if it's still available.

Chilled shot is soft lead...magnum shot is antimonial (5-6%). If it's really $1 a pound jump on it. That's a lot of that size shot for most folks and it makes good boolits and slugs!

$50.00 for 50 lbs. is a good deal even if you have to go a short distance to get it. The shot I buy is 50 miles away and I pay $36.00 per 25 lb bag. #5's are good for tree rats and bunny's, not too big and not to small in 20 ga or 410's. YMMV

Sounds like a good deal on 50lbs. I would snag it up. I'm paying $34 for 25 lbs. of #4s and that is Eagle Shot outta Peru. Like Hogtamer said it makes good bullets also. I myself like the #4's. Shot seems to penetrate better and a majority of it goes right through when used on pheasants and squirrels. Less fear of getting a crunchy surprise in your drumstick.

5's are my favorite size for my flintlock fowlers. Great price.

I think the last shot I got from one of our distributers was a few cents shy of $35 a 25 pound bag . And that was magnum grade in any size from 4 to 9 .

#5 shot usually will give complete pass through on squirrels. If it's one thing I hate it's biting down on a piece of shot.

The guy hasn't answered my phone calls. I suspect it had already sold, I hate it when people don't follow up.

I bought a couple or three pounds of #4s at a gun show the other day, wonder how a 2 3?4" 20 gauge load would work with those?

Probably just fine, #4 shot is about as big as you would want to go for pheasants or smaller sized game with a 20 ga. For hunting chilled shot will work just fine as long as you don't try to stretch your shot too long of a distance. Magnum or high antimony shot is not needed nor required for hunting loads if using larger shot as the deformation at launch is not as critical. The best thing to do is to try what ever loading you are wondering about and see what it does, then make your decision on if it will work for you.

Ditto on those furry and feathered crunchy shot surprises mac60. Pellet count does start to diminish pretty good on #4's in a twenty gauge load. Only takes a few well placed pellets to down those squirrels.
