Conical type bullet for 22 caliber underhamer

A friend built an underhammer in 22 caliber that he uses for squirrels. He is using round balls but he asked me if I thought he could use a conical type bullet - bit more range and accuracy. I told him that I had no idea (having never tried to stuff a bullet smaller than .454 down the muzzle of a barrel) but I knew a place to find out.

Anyone use a conical or "spitzer" type bullet in small caliber muzzle loaders?

I'm thinkin' that he's gonna have to be the beta tester - IF he can find/make a .22 cal conical boolit mould.

Would need to know the twist rate to know what the best bullet would be. I know that there is a company that sells 22 cal boolits for ml pistols. I almost bought some to try in my .223. Pretty good prices too. I forget the name of the place.

North American Arms makes (or used to make) one of their belt buckle size revolvers in cap and ball configuration in .22 caliber. They offered a loading kit with a powder scoop and a package of .22 slugs that looked like .22 RF bullets. Maybe your friend could call NAA and see if he can get a package to try.

How about pellets for air rifles? ..........or some cast .22 cal bullets.

Depends on the twist of the barrel and the bore measurement. If it is a recycled rimfire barrel then a 40-48gr bullet would work sized, nose first (Lee style) to suit the bore (probably .217/.218). Cast in 40/1 with a .030 card wad under it. Been toying with the idea of converting an old single shot .22RF into a muzzleloader so have thought about this one a bit.

I need more info. for you guys and I should see him tomorrow. I am pretty sure that it was a new Green Mountain barrel that he used but I will find out. Booboo when I said spitzer bullet. Do not think the pointy end would like being pushed on for seating - especially after a couple of shots.

I think some of the "hunting" pellets might do the trick if the twist rate is compatible - may be worth a try.
