I'm a big fan of AA#9. My late mentor got me started on A2400 for .357 and .44 mag, then somewhere along the way I got hooked on the #9 for the magnums. Also a fan of #7 for somewhat reduced magnum and some of the "bottom feeders", and #5 for most of the bottom feeder duty. I still like the 2400 and Unique, but the AA powders (if available) will most certainly fill the gap when 2400 and Unique ain't around.

I have been doing a lot of reading and AA#9 is what I will use in lieu of the 4100/Enforcer as a replacement for 2400.

OP, several years ago, during the very height of the powder shortage, we had a good thread started by brother darrel I believe re: the use of Alliant STEEL powder in several different cast loads for rifles and handguns. I believe that some were having pretty good luck with it in the .44 mag.

At that time, Alliant STEEL wasn't being gobbled up as soon as it hit the shelf, so that's why it was experimented with here at castboolits. Turns out it was pretty successful, IIRC.

Maybe Alliant 410 if you can find it any easier.

I have to throw in IMR 4227. Great load in my BlackHawk. 21.6g under my Lyman 429421 at 265g coww+tin. I have 6 rounds at 4" at 75 yards. I bet the gun/boolit/powder/primer can do better but I have a 2x scope and that target get's small at 75 yards.

IMR4227, AA#9, and WW296/H110 are top powders for full 44 Magnum loads. AA#9 is very clean burning and does not get under the extractor in S&W revolvers.

Another vote for IMR4227. When I ran out of and couldn't find 2400 I bought a 8# jug of 4227. I have been loading it in a lot of calibers with a lot of good results.

I scored on an 8 pound keg of 2400 about a month ago. I looked for over a year before finding this one. My substitute for 2400 was AA#9 and 4756......if I was limited to a do it all powder for all my handguns it would be SR. 4756....I shoot it in 45 colt, 500 SW, 500 L, 38 super, I understand it is now a discontinued powder. I stocked up because there is not much love for this powder and it was readily available over the last couple of years. I never liked Blue Dot when shooting in real cold weather. It seemed inconsistent to me. Powder is still scarce in Montana but it is starting to show up in greater quantities.

Ballistic Products has/had 2400 in stock for ~$22/lb plus hazmat, shipping. Can get it for around $25/lb shipped if you order 12

I've used about a pound of 4227. Not bad for a hotter than Unique type load.

Herco and 800x should provide you with decent moderate loads still capable of a deer ribs and not as much powder consumption and keep your primers looking good as well as decent extraction. ACC #9 can get you into mag velocities. A few of the faster IMR powders would work as well. That Steel powder seems to be very versatile in many applications beside steel shot for duck hunting.
May you hands be warmed on a frosty day.

I'm another fan of AA#9, it's taken some nice mule deer for me and my friend in Montana with the .44 mag and my .45 Colt Blackhawks.

Don't hate me but I have 3+ lbs of 2400 and I only use it for plinker 30-30 and similar loads. Keep your eyes open, tell your LGS's what you're looking for. Do the alert thing on the relevant sites. Good things come to those who wait...and are vigilant..
