    chainsaw chains?

Anyone ever forge welded old chainsaw chains for a knife blade ? I am curious about the heattreat and final working hardness. I remember reading about it sometime in the past but not finding any real info. I am not interested in "art knives", if it is not a funtional cutting tool it's not a knife. I "think" the chains "should" be better than steel cable but mainly just want to give it a try to see how it works. Chains and my time is free, time at the forge is a stress reliever. I like using scrap materials , I have other known steel, just seems interesting.
    Thanks for any insight

It might be interesting to find out! Especially if time isn't a factor.

I suggest to put a known high carbon steel in the center as cutting edge.
Maybe a piece of file steel.

thanks for the link Artful, that shows the likely pattern. I don't look into utube much, seems I might outta

Gelandangan, I was thinking the same, I have some 5160(used to work at a springplant) I am thinking of a a "middle"on the last fold. Seems from the video that they don't fold the chain billets. So,, forge it out, one fold with the 5160 welded in and forge to shape. I may just have to make up a single chain billet and see what happens. Probably treat it like 1095 and see what I get???
