H-4895 in 30-30

I am having difficulty finding loads for H-4895 with the 309-150 F Lee boolit in a 30/30. I am trying to obtain between 1800-1900 fps. Is anyone using a load that meets these specs that is an accurate load? (This load will be used in both a Glenfield 30 and a Win 94.) Or is this powder too slow for these speeds with this boolit?

26.5 grains was the sweet spot for me accuracy wise in my 94. Start at 25.5 and work up 2 tenths at a time til you find your happy place.

Right off hand I didn't see any loads in my chair books, but that powder is not to slow for the velocities your asking for. Depending on boolit fit and hardness you should be getting real good accuracy at those speeds with that powder. I seen data for a jacketed with the H4895 with the 150 gr bullet that went up to 34 gr for 2390 fps. The H4895, IMR 4895, and AC 2495 are pretty close on the burn rate chart and they are basic clone company competitors even though they are just slightly different. You should be able to get close to your goal with about 25 or 26 grs.

I found H4895 to indeed be too slow for use with the RCBS 30-150-FN cast bullet. It did not give an ES for 10 shots less than 100 fps until I was right at case capacity using 28.5 gr. The ES was 93 fps with a 30 fps SD at 1866 fps out of my 20" M94 Carbine. The group showed 4"+ vertical stringing. Using 21 gr of AA5744 with a 1/2 gr Dacron filler gave an ES of 27 fps with an SD of 9 fps. Those 10 shots went into 1 3/4" at 100 yards. I also have found 2400, 4227 and 4198 to be excellent powders with the cast 150 gr bullet in the 30-30.

Thank you for all the information, everyone. I was surprised to see somewhere (I don't remember where) that Hodgdon claimed that H-4895 was a very popular powder for cast boolit use, but I couldn't find data for use with cast boolits, only jacketed.

I will keep in mind what folks have said as I develop loads for the 30-30.

I have shot it a bit at the lower loading, very mild with adequate but not stellar accuracy:


I was sure I had tried higher loads 26-28grains however I can't find those at the moment.

Remember that Hodgdon data tells us that we can reduce jacketed loads by up to 60% of max with H4895, so we can easily use jacketed data and reduce a little safely, without needing fillers. I have found that you get position sensitivity below 80% of max without fillers however I have found accuracy and velocity between 80-95% of max using this rule in the 30-30 and 35 whelen.

Hi Glv, while struggling with feeding problems on my new Win 94 I chrony tested some cast loads. I use Vhit N130 and N140 and beeing, at least for the the first powder, the data a carbon copy of the loads for 4198 I thought to post them. This is what I got:
27gr n140 before 150 cast: 1.833 fps
27gr n140 before 178 cast: 1.820 fps
24gr n130 before 178 cast:2001 Fps
27gr n130 before 178 cast: 2080 Fps.
Don't know if It can help. To me is a good reason to choose the n140 over the n130 (minimize leading issues)

My Glenfield 30 really likes 28 grains of 4895 with the 150 grain Lee boolit.
