    Rifle soup can?

This might not be the right place. But others may have thought about this before Seems that wadcutter would work as well in a rifle as it does in a revolver anyone ever try a 30-06 wadcutter? I seem to remember someone writing about the Ideal and dismissing it,but why wouldn't it work??????

I did that in 38 special and 357 mag for a lever gun and it was very accurate. I used it for squirrels a couple of times.
Never tried it in a larger case.

When I was getting the L&Gs measured on my 416RM & didn't have any bullets I sized down some .430s. 310s & 265s. Both turned into wadcutters. Since I didn't have a mold yet I did a few more & shot them at 25 & 50yds. Surprisingly, they shot pretty good. 25 was 1/2", 50 was about 2". Used about 20gr Unique if I remember correctly. I now have an Accurate 350gr so havn't shot them again but would be surprised if they stayed straight at 100 or more.

Well back many a moons ago,I was told the 30-30 was a brush gun for shooting a heavy slow flat tip bullets. So why not a wadcutter,I no longer have a 30-30 so I guess the 30-06 gets the nod

I use wadcutter design in my Shiloh Sharps 1863 rifles (30-inch barrel, .54-caliber, 1:48 twist) for close range shooting - that is, the same circumstance that someone in the mid-Victorian era might use a muzzleloading 8-bore double rile. At velocity this black powder Sharps is capable of delivering, bullet stability beyond about 75 yards is suspect. . . . But why use a close range bullet at more than close range?

    Hope this helps.

I gave it a run in my 45-70, with dismal results. out to 50 yards, accuracy using a Lyman 456-401 was decent, but at 100 yards it wouldn't stay on paper and at 200 yards it was hitting up to 6 feet from the target. However, I have a two cavity NOE 312=440 that shoots very well indeed out to one hundred yards from my 30-30. This is an excellent boolit that shoots as well as anything I've tried in my 1953 Winchester 94.

I actually saw on here once where someone was using 38 wc in a 358 win w with just a snort of pistol powder for squirrels. They claimed that the bullet tumbled after 60-70 yards and so would be less dangerous for tree rat shooting. Haven't had time to try it myself but seemed like a great way to gain field experience with your big game rifle.

I have a wad cutter design made by Hoch [why anyone would pay the price and get that design is beyond me] and I was about to sell it when I loaded some 30-30s using that ugly beast and fired them in my Ruger #1. I was cutting clover leafs at fifty yards with iron sights. I changed my mind about selling it. The mold is also adjustable for length. Go figure.

A right-cylinder becomes dynamically unstable at long range. You can test this yourself firing .38 Special target wadcutters in your .38/.357 rifle. They will shoot fine at 25 to 50 yards, but if you try them at 10 yard increments beyond that you will observe that the dispersion becomes nonlinear at longer ranges.

Wadcutters work fine in revolvers at revolver ranges. They work OK in rifles at short, woods ranges, but are not a good choice for longer range work. An ogival nosed flat point in which the meplat is about 0.6 to 0.7 of the bullet diameter works very well at longer ranges and maintains its stability. The .44-40 Winchester blackpowder load is a good case in point and does well to 200 yards or more, as this target fired by W44WCF shows. The next two targets were fired at 100 yards with blackpowder loads from my Marlin 1894S with Microgroove rifling, which (according to gunshop folklore) isn't supposed to like either soft lead bullets or black powder, but I was careful not to mention this near the rifle, so it didn't know...

I got good accuracy out to 50 yards, but past that in a .308 and 7.62x54, I saw signs in the target that they were starting to tumble at 75 yards.
100 yards they were accurate to a point, but most hit the target sideways.
Maybe a Boat Tail Wad Cutter ? would that give it some more distance ?

I shoot plenty of the Lee TL-314-90-SWC (designed for 32ACP) in the 30-30, it has shot well in an 1984, 336 and Savage 340. That is it in my avatar.
