Bench Rest/Front-Rest shooting a springfield trapdoor

When bench rest shooting using only the Fore-Rest,
where do you guys place your stock on the rest?
    in relation to the back-band
    forward of it
    or behind it?

    does it matter?

in my last shoot, i was resting 6 inches forwards of the rear band, my first and second shots were doing good, close together,
then it would start spreading out, about 1 shot every 3-4 minutes apart for a count of 5 total
wet patch/dry patch between each shot
trying to tighten up my groups and figure this out,
my bayonet is tight and not jiggly, bands are snug not over tight or loose,

so was wondering if i rest it back where you'd hold it in an offhand shot,(under the rear of the sight) if it would help any?

    thanks

I rest mine just behind the rear barrel band.

Experiment with placement when practicing. A piece of tape to make sure its in the right spot helps alot. On rifles where you rest directly on the barrel not only where you place the rest but also that its fairly close to the same place every time. I use a iece of colored tape where the center of the sticks /rest is to help get it right every time.

    a lot of good advice,
I just figured out why I've got side to side up and down shots,,,,,,NOT having the rifle straight up and down,
read some do it on purpose to correct for wind, Im doing it out of bad habit, gotta change that too,
and here i thought my trapdoor was Bi-Polar,,LOL

Another thing to check is the cleaning rod stop. Normally, it will not touch the barrel but if broken, it can touch the barrel and cause it to shoot inaccurately.

Some recommend removing the rod altogether when shooting for group.
