Please help with sizer scoring bullets

    Hello Everyone

I bought a used star sizer and it came with a .356 and .452 die and punch
    marked San Diego.

I am seeing something and it looks off to me but may just be "normal" for the star.

When using either die and sizing bullets, when the bullets come out, they have score marks
all around the sides (6 scores), one score mark for each of the lube holes.
I even tried a FMJ 9mm bullet and it scored that too.

Is this normal or is there a problem?

Currently I'm not using lube because I'm sizing powder coated bullets.
So I'm dry sizing right now.

When I remove the dies and look into them with a light, both dies look very smooth and shiny inside,
with a very fine finish in the constricted section in the lube hole area.
I don't see any burrs on the lube holes.
I know that the lube holes are clear because I probed them with a small piece of wire.

I recently re-polished the die bores using a lathe and 2000 grit diamond paste,
and haven't tried them yet to see if there is any improvement.

What are peoples thoughts on this topic?
Do the sized bullets from your star come out with score marks from the lube holes?
or are they perfectly smooth in the resized area?

    Please help

    Mine are smooth.
Do you have some holes blocked with lead shot ?
Don't like being hammered by the Cast Boolits Staff, then don't be a nail.
The rules are simple to follow.

Turn up a small brass ball on a stem ( measure the holes dia add .100-.150 to the dia of the holes ) you want the stem long enough to reach into the die to the holes with a end on it to hold onto spin it. Coat ball with diamond paste and reach into die to hole and lightly break the sharp edge on the holes and die body corners. spin the ball between you fingers working in an oval pattern to help it maintain roundness. This will lightly break the edge and remove any burrs. go slow and carefull

If it was me, I might try a little of that diamond paste on a couple of boolits. That should polish them along the correct axis, IMO.
Warning: I know Judo. If you force me to prove it I'll shoot you.

Polishing or lapping the bore of the die will sharpen the edge ( corner) where the lube hole and sizer bore meet making a sharp corner to scrap more. The above is how we cured holes scraping parts in presses and assembly machines. With out lightly breaking the edge itself it can be futile. Some turned a thereaded stem and ball with tapped hole and reached thru the actual hole on small holes bores and with the holes close to an edge the ball on a stem worked well and easier. In the tool room we would start with around 320-400 grit lapping compound working to diamond. It dosnt take much if you see a fine line breaking the edge you should be good.

Have you tried passing a lubed boolit or one with some case sizing lube to see if that makes a difference? Even with the standard size and lube boolit you have to pass a lubed boolit through every so often to reduce drag at the start of the die.

Mine did that and I sent it to Lathesmith, and he polished it and now it's perfect. Some guys just put a brass bore brush in a drill and run it thru the die several times and it seems to work for some. Good luck, Rod
