    i have s&w 689 357 mag 4"bbl ....question about grips

mine has the black plastic grips ...this gun is at least 30 years old.

the metal is in super great condition...however the grips are scuffed and i'd like to put nice wood grips on it.

how do i know the difference between j...k...squared butt or any other alphabet for my frame style?

i'd hate to spend 50 bucks on a nice pair of grips only to find that they are for a "N" frame ...and i have a "Z" frame
    or whatever!

how can i tell which is what?

Take the grips off and take a picture and show us.

Is it actually a Model 686? If so, it's an "L" frame revolver which uses "K" frame grips. When you take the grips off you'll note pretty fast if it is a square butt or round butt by the heel of the grip.

    From the S&W web site:

When you purchase grips, they will tell you which frame size, and which butt configuration they fit. If you have a 686, square butt, then search grips in the configuration.
