    Ball turning tool from scrap

Here's a ball turning tool I made with my lathe and mill. Everything is made of scrap, with the exception of the screw and the carbide bit. The handle was given to me from a co-worker. It came off a surface grinding machine that he used to own. I milled the surface flat, milled a 1/2" slot in it, used the existing tapped hole and made 3/4-16" bolt to fit in it to hold the tool-post. The base has a bearing press fit into it that is a press fit into a dovetail that I made of scrap steel that engages into the carriage where the top slide fits. The tool-post was made from 1/2" steel plate that I rough cut out with a hacksaw and finished shaping on the mill. All you have to do is drill and tap a hole in some scrap aluminum/brass/steel, and turn it in the lathe on a rod that is threaded. When it's done, I use a pair of pliers with leather padding to cushion the ball while I unscrew it. The bearings really make it smooth to turn and easy to move.

(I vacuumed up the aluminum and steel shavings to make the pictures more presentable.)

ID:	146739Here's a pic of the ball attached to the bridgeport mill. This is my homemade quill feed handle that replaces the bubba'd welded/brazed and bent handle they had on it.

I made another ball to go on my improved ram handle today as well. The handle was rust blued with "Andy's Rust Blue". I am very happy it turned out well and the ability to turn little nubs and cutoffs into balls is very handy. Eventually, I'll mill the other end for another insert so I can turn inside radii, but that's not needed at the moment.

This is the one that I saw on youtube that gave me inspiration to make it. Watch the video and you'll understand how they work better:

Lots of puns could be made from this thread...

Now if someone has some thick brass round stock I could use to make brass ones...

Sorry. All my brass balls are spoken for. LOL!

Perhaps you could start a thread concerning the manufacturing of Ginormous Brass Nuts . . . . . . ?

    Seriously though, nice job.

You could start saving up all you scrap brass to melt down and make you some brass balls!

    That indexing fixture looks expensive!

I'm actually planning on doing this. I'll be saving any unusable brass and making a greensand mold to rough cast and then turn off the casting lines and texture on the lathe using the sprue to hold it. I've got about 10 lbs of premixed greensand in an airtight bag to keep it moist.
I still need to make an appropriate crucible. I'm still looking for an old fire extinguisher to cut in half for this purpose. Already have the waste oil furnace built, and I've used it on a couple occasions to make things like knives.

John: You beat me to it! A friend of mine showed me how to do this about 25 years ago and I have used the set up several times but always with Delrin so it goes much faster and fewer number of passes.

I also used a regular 5C Whirly Gig (Spindex) to spin the blank and feed down with the Quill to form the ball.

We made the mast pivot bearings for Nacra Catamarans which were 2" Delrin Balls . I made over a hundred of them in one day.

And I thought I was one of the few who knew how to do this.

Ran about $250 without the chuck. I have two, one with four jaw and one with three. Can also be done with a spin jig. I have made balls 2" in diameter, no brass.
