Best case to make 1876 50/95 from

Recently ordered an Uberti 1876 in 50/95. I have read that you can make brass from 348 win. 50/90 sharps and 50 Alaskan. Which would be the best to start with for the least amount of work to get to 50/95? I am new to reforming brass, this will be my first.
Also noticed that there are two different loading dies listed in that caliber one for 50/95 win. express and another in the same caliber but for the uberti chamber. Uberti changed chamber dimensions from the original??

If you start with one of the fifties, you won't have to expand the necks. You may have to turn down the rim diameter though.

On the other hand, .348 Winchester brass is probably a lot cheaper to purchase.

I think with any of the parent cases you will soon wish for a powered trimmer. One of the small tubing cutters makes a lot of sense when you need to trim more than ¼" of brass.

I use .50 Alaskan (Starline) or .348 Winchester brass. The .50 Alaskan is easier to find and less work.

I have 50 50/90 cases on the way. There is a gun show close by next weekend and at the last show one of the regular venders had some 50 Alaskan brass.
The only part of the conversion that sounds potentially painful is thinning the shell rim. Hoping that since Uberti has modified the cylinder maybe they have made changes that allow the thicker rim to function ok.

if you are referring to me, I use the rims as are. The case does need to be trimmed for length however.

A lathe would be best; but it can be done with an electric drill and a file, with a lot of extra trial and error.

Is the diameter too large or is the rim too thick on the brass you have?

The Sharps case measures .650 and the 50/95 Jameson brass measures .624. I have trimmed one Sharps case to length and loaded it. I cannot run it through the mag tube(lever action gun) so I have to chamber it up top. I have to put way more pressure on the lever to get it to seat home enough to shoot. Once I have sent it home all the way it shoots and extracts fine. Small difference between .650 and .624 but it is making a difference. So yes rim diameter seems too big. rim thickness is so close it shouldn't matter.

I think you might find that the rim on the 50/90 is thicker as a well as being wider than the 50/95. This might be why your action is difficult to close.

The 50/110, 348 and 50 Ak share the same head size, rim diameter and rim thickness. The 50/90 has a larger head diameter, larger rim diameter and thicker rim.

I have a ton of old cartridges and many that aren't current enough with factory brass. The brass you use many times comes from some other cartridge. This has already been mentioned, so I looked at some of what I have in that 50-95 or 50 "Express".

I took pictures of the cartridges for comparison between the 50-95, 50-70 and 45-75. All of these have been made from other parent brass other than a few 45-75 cases and 50-70 *- brass.

You can compare the size of the bases between the cartridges, there isn't a whole lot of difference. I didn't photograph the circumference of the case above the base as there wasn't anything that seemed critical in those dimensions...
