downloading an '06

today a friend came to me and asked if i can reduce his 30-06 loads. (he had a cancer on top of his neck, took it off, replaced the neck muscle with pectoral muscle and then he went thru chemo and radition treatments). i happen to have a few '06 that i reloaded to 170gr sierra fn at around 2500fps. i grabbed my '06 savage and let him shoot. he said it hurt a little bit, but he figures he can live with it.
i told him to wait until i got my handloading books out to see if there was anything else i could do. well, this evening i looked at the books and the only thing i could find was 2450fps and a reduced load from speer that goes from 1800-2000fps. i would like to go from 2000-2200fps(170gr sierra) but i'm having a real tough time finding it.
if anybody has a reduced load, around 170gr-180gr flat or round nose, at about 2000-2200fps(like shooting a 30-30), would be greatly appreciated.

i would like to find 2400(big can) for shooting cast boolits. and no, he doesn't like them!!!

There's a whole new world of 125 to 135 gr jacketed bullets nowdays that are suitable for deer, if that's what he's after. It appears he doesn't want to go the cast bullet route, so these would be a viable option. There are also a lot of 150 gr 308 bullets out there too.

I would try the H4895 60% reduction rule. Check it out on Hodgdon web sight.
using this rule data for a 175 gr. bullet the max load is 46.7 gr. giving 2700 FPS . So if you reduce this to 60% would give you. 28.02 gr of powder for 1620fps.
Going to 75% gives you 35 gr. of powder to give you 2025fps.
so check out the web sight and you can do the math for your self.

If your friend is going to hunt deer with the rifle you might try a 150 gr. flat nose for the 3030 and load it to about 1800 to 2000 fps with reloader 7 or 4895.

4895 rules for reliable reduced loads. If your friend wants to hunt, I worked upa bunch of 125 grain Sierra gk over 35gr of imr4895 for the wife and kids that feels like a 22 mag in my old heavy rem700, but has taken 2 deer and shoots 1 inch 80 yard groups to 100 yard poa. For plinking, Unique over 8-12 grains is a blast up to 230gr cast.

Or you can simply use their data. They do list reduced / youth loads for the 30-06. It very likely uses H-4895 and a 125 or 130 grain bullet. Believe me I can tell you from first hand experience these are very good loads. A Hornady 130gr SP at 2500f/s or so (this is typically a varmint bullet) makes an awesome whitetail load and recoil is mild.

If that doesn't suit him you can go with Trail Boss data. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I don't recall the numbers, about 25 years ago I loaded up some reduced 06 loads for a friend that became very recoil sensitive following neck surgery. I used IMR 3031 using 30/30 and 300 Savage data as a guide. Results shooting bench rested on paper were surprisingly good. We used pulled 30 cal FMJ slugs weighing 147 if I remember right.

Best bet is to do as my friend eventually did. Sold his 06 and bought a Savage 99 chambered in 243. I have another friend stubborn about lead. He doesn't simply dislike lead, he refuses to use it in any of his guns except his muzzle loader.

If you must use the 170 grain Sierra, bumping up Speer's reduced 4198 load by 2-4 grains should put you there. Remington published 180 grain 30-06 loads using 4198 up to 36 gr. for a velocity of 2350. Regards, Woody

I think you will have more luck reducing the projectile weight to reduce recoil, just a guess though. Speer makes, or did make, a dandy .30 cal 130 grain FP, meant for the .30-30, but it should work okay in an '06.

Reduce the velocity and projectile weight while still being in the bullets design velocity and your friend should be good for deer under two hundred yards.

If I were loading for reduced recoil. The Sierra 150 grain flat base soft point #2130 at between 2,200 and 2,400 fps would be my choice after a cast bullet. I have 30 caliber cast bullet molds in 150, 180,200 and 220 grains that I have shot in my 30-06. All around 1,950 fps. There is a huge difference in recoil between the 150's and the 200's. 150's are nothing but the 200's thump you pretty good. I even shoot the Saeco 150gr FN at 2,200 fps from my little Win 94 lever gun in 30-30 and it's a ***** cat to shoot.

IMHO either your RL7 or 4895 would be excellent powder choices for low pressure loads.

A 150 gr rn 30-30 bullet with 30 grs H 4198 would give you 1997 fps out of a 20 inch barrel (30-06). 30-30 velocities with a 30-30 bullet and recoil.

I have some 125 grain Nosler Ballistic tip bullets that I was going to load in my 30-30 contender, PM your address if you want to try a few and I'll ship you some.

I use 26.6g Reloader 7 with the Lee C309-170F bullets in .308 with my Remington 788 and get an average of 2007 fps out of the 24" barrel. In a 30-06, that would give you about 1900 fps in a 24" barrel. No fillers, just a GC lead bullet lubed with 2:1 Beeswax/Vaseline and sized through a Lee push through sizer. This is at 50 yards. Very low recoil and pleasant shooting.
