Smile slip on or crimp on??

I have a box of .45 caliber Lyman gas checks (28272730), they seem to be shorter than my regular Hornady crimp on .45 caliber gas checks. Are these slip on or crimp on checks, I can't really tell by looking at the wall of the check. Thanks for any info.

The Lyman checks are slip on, and usually made from gilding metal instead of copper (Hornady). When properly installed they perform every bit as well as crimp-on checks in my rifles.

Depends on the age of the Lyman checks. They used to make their own but now are selling Hornady checks. The real old Lymans are brass, at least some 44 cal I have are.

    This is correct.
I found out the hard way.
I thought all checks were crimp on because modern Lyman checks are identical to Hornady. This was not always the case. The old Lyman checks do not crimp on, but were made much flatter and more accurate than checks are today.
Precision in the wrong place is only a placebo.

First, if the Lyman or Ideal GC is made of brass, it's a 'slip-on'.

Here is what I learned about them.

They work great on the boolits cast from older Lyman or Ideal molds, as the GC shank is larger, better utilizing the thinner material of the 'slip-on' GCs. When used on current production molds, from most any manufacturer, the 'slip-on' GCs work more like 'slip-off' GCs

They are definitely made of copper and are not as short as I thought. Hornady .45 caliber GC's measure .0695 and the Lyman GC's measure .068. From what everyone is saying it seems they are probably crimp on.

I don't think I would use them if they didn't crimp on. I've used Hornady gas checks for years and never had a problem. I see lots of threads about how bad GC's are and the reason is the slip on style.

I used to use mostly Hornady gaschecks, but did acquire one time a box of old Lyman checks that I found in a flea market. I seat them in a press while sizing--either brand. As time passed, I became a member here, and discovered Blammer's gaschecks. I never checked to see if they were the crimp on design, but I assume that they are. Those work well enough for all of the gascheck boolits that I cast. Now I've got a question--are those Gator checks crimp-ons?

Applying gas checks is an aspect of reloading that can't really be streamlined. At least with the "crimp on", as long as they're no sizing issues, they snap on and stay on. It can be frustrating when you apply checks pre-sizing only to have them fall off. This is my experience with the Lyman slip-on variety.

The one Blammer sells, which I have bought, are crimp style and pretty certain are Gator Checks. The way I look at it, they have the style of the Hornady crimp on without the price--cup may actually be a lighter gauge. IMO, a good product
