Question Lyman 445599 hollow base pin

My BP mentor, who's 20 years my senior & I don't consider myself no youngster anymore, is looking to replace the pin on a Lyman 445599 mould. The pin was lost in a residential fire last year.

He has contacted Lyman and was initially told that yes, they can do it, so the mould was sent to them. Now they are telling him that they can't do it because the mould is obsolete.

Does anyone have a recommendation as to who, or whom, might be able to machine a replacement pin? As to what the dimensions of this pin might be, I haven't a clue.

I have a lathe and mill. Sometimes the simplest of things pass me...is it a hollow base mold? An alignment pin or something else?

This is a hollow base mould. Don't see, or haven't found, an image of it yet.

Maybe an appropriate question here would be, does anyone here have this mould and would they be willing to send some samples of the boolit, or measurements of the pin.

I have that mold "somewhere", ( haven't used it in years, prolly never will . ) .
When I wake up i'll go and find it and take a couple of pics and get my calipers out , if you need a few boolits I will cast a few up for you and send them on.

Gotta wake up first though,,,,, lol..

Well...I have always heard a picture is worth a thousand words...now that I can fully understand what your after I can honestly say yes...I can make that pin.

It would be best for me to have the mold so I can make sure the final fit is proper, the shoulder height is correct and the retaining pin is in position.

BTW thanks for the pictures adrians!

Be advised, the diameter of the hole in the blocks that the pin goes in has changed over the years like with most Lyman minies.

While I wasn't certain, I was afraid of that possibility. Thus, why I request the mold to be sent to me so the pin could be properly fit. Thanks for your help.

If I were doing the work, I would convert the base pin to a "Floating Base Pin" like the one found on the
RCBS Minie Ball Moulds. With that Mod, you can double or triple your speed in casting bullets.

My intention is to use this in a .45 Hawken. I don't know, at this time, if my mentor shot this in one of his home made rifles or something of a commercial mfg., but he seems to think highly of it.

I just checked mine. The dimensions are the same as Adrian's. My mold is circa 1972-73. This will make you sick, I paid $11.25 for it new.

^^^ Glad you got your mold for $11.25.....I think they were $35 or $40 by the time I started casting boolits.

Southron is this the RCBS design? If so, then I can see why it would ramp up production...
