    Happy 4th My 24 pounder

    Firing my 24 pounder today,
    machined it out years ago,
its a replica from plans from a gunsmithing school
of the USS Constitutions 24 pounders,

24 inches long 4 inches diam
    1 1/8 bore,

machined out on a 36 inch lathe,
ya boring it out was a real chore took me a month, a little at a time,

    BP only

carriage is solid oak, wheels are spruce and steel lined
rolls back about a foot with a full load of powder and a piece of bread for a wad,

WOW! Happy July 4th to all. What a way to celebrate. That is a nice one. Care to share details of "the load"?

I wrap a piece of tin-foil around a 1 inch dowel, pull it off,
load up 3/4 inch high of 1F BP,
    cut and fold the tinfoil,
slowly ram the tin-foil pack down the barrel, then the piece of bread for a wad, ram it all home,
using a poker i open up the tinfoil through the fuse hole,
stealing wicks from smoke-crackers,-store bought, set the wick in and light,

I tested (proofed) when i first built it with a 2 inch load, and hid behind a wood pile,

going to try to attach a vid,--- It won't let me,
    how do i do this?

What a marvelous achievement. Everybody should have one... but they don't.

They used to experience quite a bit of erosion of the touch-hole, which could be reduced by clapping a hand, with a heavy leather palm-piece, over the touch-hole. It seems odd that this was effective, when we mostly think of erosion happening while the projectile is in the bore, but knowledgeable people used to do this. In the case of an amateur experimenter this would probably be nullified by the time it would take to walk back to the gun. But a device which springs or slides into place under recoil might be of some use.

How did you fix the trunnions? Asuming you haven't weakened it by inserting those, I can't imagine it being dangerous. There is a lot more metal in it than a black powder shotgun, and the metal is good. Now I am going to Have you tested it for accuracy yet?
