Lube on base of bullet..

Has anyone had the experience of lube getting on the base of a bullet in a Saeco lubesizer?? These are 185 grain SWC with a bevel base. I got them unsized and unlubed. Moving the height up and down made no difference. By chance I tried a plain base bullet on a hunch, no lube on base. I think that the bevel base is opening up the lube feed holes before the side of the bullet can seal them off until the lube groove get into position. And , of course, repeats itself on the way out. Any thoughts or experience in this matter??

Its pretty common with bevel base bullets, which is why I don't have any bevel base bullet molds. I could not adjust my Lyman enough to stop it either. I'm not sure what to do about it or if it will even hurt anything. I get a little on some flat base bullets and I just keep an old towel across my leg to wipe the base off on when loading them.

I lube BB bullets for 9mm. This can definitely happen if too much pressure is cranked on the lube reservoir. Some folks here will punch a circle of styrofoam meat tray from the grocery store and put it under the bullet in the sizer.

cut out a piece of styro-foam from a meat packing tray and squish it down in there.
it will fill in that bevel base area.

I'd give more specifics, but I use star sizers and don't got that problem.

I get that with my Lyman 45's too, using the BB boolits. I do the trick that JeffG mentioned.... use an empty case to punch some styro wads from an egg carton or other styro carton and put those under the boolits to seal out the lube as it passes the holes. I usually get about 10 boolits per little styro wad before it gets messy and I grab another one.

Usually it's caused by too much pressure put on it by the user, but this is reason enough to get a STAR!!

It's inescapable with a bevel base design in an "in and out" type sizer, regardless of who made it. The sizer fills the void at the base of the bullet like it's simply another lube groove. The styrofoam trick does work for a while.

I had a couple BB molds. A little "kiss" in each mold with a stone in a Dremel-tool and I no-longer had a problem...nor a BB mold.

This is my solution for this problem. Machining a new insert that will accommodate the bullet's bevel. Generally I would not choose a bevel based design but they do crop up from time to time and this is one of my favourite .45 bullets, the Saeco #67 230grain TC.

I've found that if I punch disks out of a removable insole, they last much longer than the meat tray/egg carton ones.

Thanks for your comments. I have a small lathe and enjoy tinkering to solve these sorts of problems. I have made them for several of my Lyman / RCBS sizer dies too. If you know a hobbyist with a lathe it shouldn't take too long to copy the original part with an accommodating profile. I use whatever steel is to hand. Nothing special but it is a more permanent solution. I'd offer to help but I am on the far side of the pond!

I have one bullet (mold) with a bevel base and to solve the problem I had a machinist friend make a contoured part to fit the bevel so that when the bullet is brought up from the sizing die there is no room for the lube to fill the bevel. Problem solved. LLS
