Paper Patch the 8mm

I have 2 24/47's that measure 323 when slugged, I use a Lee 175gr boolit and size them to 325. I tried paper patch using transparent paper rapped twice the diameter. When I measure again I read 330 inch (paper and boolit). Is this to big to shoot safely?? At 1700-1800fps, maybe 2000fps or even 2400-2600fps. I'm trying to develop a replacement for J-boolits and heard paper patch will get me there. I get very good results without the paper patch at .325 inch using gas check and 860, 5010 or H4895 powder.

If the throat isn't large enough to accept the patch you'll have problems. The patch shouldn't be damaged in any way before entering the barrel. The leading edge of the patch needs to be evenly pressed woen into the boolit by the lands in the leade. Your boolit OD is too large to begin with.

I'm trying to develop a replacement for J-boolits and heard paper patch will get me there.

Try sizing the boolits to .321" then wrap with some .0015" thick paper. This will give you a dried over the patch OD of about .325". With the right load and alloy, you should be able to reach your goal.

I would size to .314 to .315 and give them 2 wraps of 16# paper. Works great in both of my 8mm. If you use an alloy of BNH 14.0 to 14.5 you can load full power and have a great hunting bullet.

That's exactly what I do with my 325471.

Pdawg: try two wraps of Meade tracing paper on the Lee "bator" bullet from Mid South. I wrap mine and lube with Johnsons paste wax after drying. Then size to .225 for my hornet. Accuracy is on a par with factory ammo (1.5 to 1.75 inches. I haven't found anything yet that will match really good reloads. 2700 -2800 fps.

Oh Lord! And here I was thinking there was nothing I hadn't tried. I can picture myself TRYING to wrap a 22 cal boolit! It'll be just like the time I decided I needed to tie some #24 Midges for trout. There is still a box of #24 hooks around here with 99 of 100 hooks in it!

in my youth I tied a #20 Muddler, barbless
and some Trico's IIRC #28 with the leader attached, they are still in the flybox, I caught a fish with one and couldn't get the hook out, never used anything smaller than a #18 hook after that. even went to mostly barbless, they come out of cold hands easier.

I have been PP the 120gr/.32 GB mold to .321 to try to shoot at HV in my Schuetzen 1-16 twist 32-40, an attempt at what the Bench Rest guys are doing with .30 cal now. 100gr bullets 1-15 twist 2700+fps. As soon as it is warmer than now, I'll give it a go.

I tried some .250 to .258 once and after about 10 or 12 my hands were so cramped up I had to stop. Guess my 10 fat little fingers just wont work with those little bitty boolits ! I will stick with 30cal and larger. BTW those I did get patched were 97gr loaded over 57gr of H4831 in a 25-06 and shot under an inch.

hey I answered my question, whent abackward on the trend and located my resource in the lyman 3rd edition got 10 lyman loading books including one from way back when mr chales e. lyman 111 was writing , man got some interesting people in there.

Say buckshot I noticed and cannot remember what your favorite paper is for pping bullets,can ya tell this dumb country boy were to obtain some of that stuff going to try it as to oppsed to gc'sand would 20-1 or softed be fairally decent to use, got to get a couple of lee .310 and polish them out to 8mm. thanks for your help. kjg

Pdawg I have fairly small hands. A high capacity mag in a 9 mm is a full hand for me. Maybe I could teach my wife??
I do them during commercials and yellow flags during the car race. It ain't the type of acctivity that holds my attention for very long. About 75 to 80 % will go through the sizer the first time. very few need to go through the third time. It is rhe easiest way to get factory velocities with a cast bullet. I shudder to think what one of those little 40 grainers would be like. My bator mold trrows a 53 grain pill without gas check.
Bret it is a curiosity as much as anything. I cannot exceede factory accuracy with this combo and if I value my time I don't save any money. I am toe only kid on my block to have a lot of toys. I also carry a flint hunting knife and grow my oen tobacco in my garden (N. rustica). Definitly not for the fain hearted. It makes better arrow poison than smokes or chews.

I got hooked on PP back in the 70s. Interestingly enough patching up jacketed .308 for an 8mm Mauser with a .318 bore. Good .318 bullets were real hard to find back then. Now, none of my rifles see a bare cast bullet. Its just too easy to get the performance I want with paper. I can get 2200 with pure lead and close to 3000 with an alloy of BNH 14.0 to 14.5. Makes darn good hunting bullets.
