    wish i lived in Alaska

was watching one of those live in Alaska reality shows last night and the father of 2 kids (and his wife) shot a doe. Said they were happy as now they had there meat for 6 months. Sure wish our deer were that big. Were lucky to get a month out of one and that's just the wife and I. He must be serving some awful small portions. I figure about 40 lbs max of meat of an average deer. That leaves 10lbs per person for 6months. that's about a 1/3 of a lb of meat per week per person. I pick more then that out of my teeth!!

Moose, about three months tops. Those Sitka black tails are like those wheeziana swap dogs. Musta been filmed in Juneo where those hippies and tree hugger semi vegans live. A friend of mine goes through two to three moose a year for him and his girlfriend.

They just probably shot it with that wide angle. Phoneywood smoke n mirrors.

Lloyd, what are you folks paying for pumpkin. It was 58 cents a lb in the store today.

Maybe they are vegetarians 6 days a week.

It has to be correct/real/factual, after all it is a reality show.

Bet they forget to mention the moose, and salmon already put up.

The shows other than Life Below Zero are a crock. If the deer was anything like the ones on the islands down around Whittier, one wouldnt feed me for a month

Not to argue how long a deer will feed a family, but around here the average mature deer usually yields about 90 pounds at least. Most times better than 100 pounds. True, that wouldn't come near feeding my family of 4 for 6 months. But when I've watched the Alaska reality show we like, they talk about needing at least 4 mature bucks to feed two people for 6 months. Plus they harvest Moose and Caribou also. So all in all I think if they can get in at least a couple kills each different season, deer, moose, and caribou it should feed them quite well. Of course no one can count on filling your meat storage every year so one would have to improvise and adapt to feed the family.

Been watching Life below Zero though Sling TV. Love the show. One guy that lives way out in the boonies, shot a moose, and he was very happy. Said that sometimes he would eat 3-4 lbs of meat in one day!

they claim MI whitetail are on the large side. I doubt one in 50 deer I shoot nets much more then 40 or maybe at most 50lbs of deboned meat.

If they run short of food, they can drive the 10 miles down to Homer, AK and eat at any number of restaurants.

Jmho, if they said the truth out loud, like the above comments, they'd get kicked off the air by the animal rights people.

I'm hoping for 3 deer this year.
That would put maybe 1/8lb per person each day.

If I said "3 deer" and a doofus overheard me, I'm sure I'd hear how I'm causing the extinction of deer. Killing way too many animals for no reason.
