What does your Lyman M die use for the expander plug?
I called Lyman and ordered 3 , .311 dia exp plugs and when I got them they were marked 30R on the invoice, measured out at .306. I think she sent the wrong ones.

IIRC it should be marked 31R and the part number should end with 311 on the invoice. I've had a problem with my order the one time I called as well.
I recently got the Lyman M die for my 7.62x54 and use the same one for the .303.
It is the 31 long, but I think they list a 30 for the Russian.
Also got one for my 30 Cal's and 8mm mauser.
For the past 30 Years I was just using a homemade punch to expant the necks whem I did cast boolits.
Accuracy was still good with them, but I feel better with the M dies now.
Can you do me a favor?
Mic the dia of the expander.
thanks

Artful, you've been a big help, Thanks.

I have one of the lyman dies, but don't use it for my mosin anymore. Lee dies come with the 308 expander, you order the larger .311 expander. But thats a bit tight for .314 bullets. I bought an 8mm expander, and lathed it down to expand for .314 bullets.
Thanks all.
Called Lyman and have the right ones on the way, they were pretty decent about it and sent the others before I had the returns in the mail.
Basic question: If I use .312 bullets - do I use a .310 expander? Size the expander or the step diameter to the bullet. I assuming .002 under-sizing for neck tension.
So a 31R would be correct (.311 expander - .313 Step).
Just playing with my 7.62x54R, 303, - properly sized bullets range from .311, 312, .315
And with NOE expanders - I can have one of each flavors...
I have been loading Lyman 314299 sized .313-.314 for about 6 months now. I use a Lee Collet Neck Sizing Die and flare the case mouths slightly with a pair of needle nosed pliers.
The ID of the cases after sizing is .312 so there is some minor neck tension. I crimp in the crimp groove.
This and 16 gr of 2400 have been working really well in my Enfield #4 Mk1 for Short Range Silhouette, 50-200 meters. Last month I shot 25/40 and am looking at 30's in the near future. hopefully this coming Sat.

Short answer - Yes - you from 0.001 to 0.003 under the bullet size your using. be aware that the larger the difference
in dimensions the higher the chance that the case will resize your boolit, especially if using a softer alloy.
Way to test is seat a boolit in a case wait a week or so and pull the boolit (inertial hammer for me) then check the size
of the boolit that came out.
