Question PID thermocouple type for ovens

Decided to build another PID set-up because unlike B-Jim's mine temp settings seem to vary all the time.

Was wondering which type to use: the short one that screws on and extends into the oven about 1/2 inch or the 4-6 inch straight probe type.

Was thinking of going in through the back where there is just one layer of metal but have seen several that come in the side are extend almost to the middle of the oven

    thanks

I use the long one but it goes in my pot too. Long means the air temp is measured correctly. I got the 'K' one with hitemp insulation. I tossed the outer cover on the oven, go in through the side. Use an old bath towel for insulation.
    Whatever!

You want to place it where it will see the best temp profile of the boolits. If not a convection (fan) type, that will be a bit tricky because there are hot and cold spots potentially in a standard oven.

Best to just decide the easiest access, put it in, check against an oven thermometer to see if it is reading temp about where you want it.

The 4-6" one will allow you to adjust and play with the insertion length to find a "sweet spot". Remember, only the tip is the isothermic junction that measures the temp.

    Good luck!

I got the long skinny one. See it just above the boolits? In a convection oven, that has got to be a pretty good spot to measure and regulate the temp.
My convection oven had a rotisserie rod and when I pulled that out, it left a perfect hole in the side. (but you could drill your own.)
